How can I learn to play Magic the Gathering by myself and without spending much on cards?
-
I work in a shop that sells Magic cards and other things. Until now, I've mainly only worked with the other things. But now my boss wants me to learn how to play Magic so I can better understand what we're selling. I've avoided doing it so far because it seems like it would consume a lot of time and money. So without spending an incredible amount of time outside of work or money, how can I learn the game? He gave me an Innistrad deck (the kind that's ready to play straight out of the box). I was going to practice this week on my vacation, but I don't have anyone to play with. I also thought about doing MTG online, but I read that you should already know how to play before you try to do the online version. I have a very basic understanding of the mechanics of the game (put out a land, draw a card, put a card down and tap your mana, swing with the others, block, etc), but I need to understand how cards work together, why you build decks in fours, what cards are good and why, etc. So what's the most efficient way for me to learn? Is there something I can do by myself this week while I'm on vacation?

Answer:
all you would have to do is wear something nice go to your carshop on a tournament day(or another) say you want to get in to magic but you dont know what to get, Nerds everywhere(in the shop) will flock to your aid give your pointers and or cards to help you, worst comes to worst you might have to buy 1 or 2 things yourself..

Uh, if you work at a card shop, you should have no problem finding people to teach you. And especially since you are a female, there should be plenty of guys willing to help you out.

You build decks with 4 copies of particular cards (unless you play in a format that otherwise restricts this amount) because that's what the rules dictate. You can have up to 4 copies of any card that isn't basic land. As far as knowing what cards are good and why.. This is just typically something that you learn as you become more experienced. You're not really going to find a website or a book that's going to teach you all that much in regard to the intricacies (primarily strategy) of Magic unless you already have a basic understand of this. The best thing for you to do is find established players that are willing to play and be patient with you as you learn and gain that necessary experience. Practice Practice Practice.

That is a very difficult question according to your predicament. There are some computer programs such as Cockatrice and Magic Workstation where you can play MTG without buying the cards. The most efficient way to learn is to play against other players. The game is meant to be played with 2 or more people. The learning curve is when you interact with the game. It helps you understand how cards work together. If you want to know why certain cards are good, there are online sites such as pojo, Star City games and Channel Fireball. They have good reviews written and online.
