Yugioh: card gaurd counter question?
-
my cousin and I where dueling and I summond "Card Gaurd" this is it's effect " When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: Place 1 Guard Counter on it. This card gains 300 ATK for each Guard Counter it has. Once per turn: You can target 1 other face-up card you control; remove 1 Guard Counter from this card and place 1 Guard Counter on that target. If that card would be destroyed, remove 1 Guard Counter from it instead" and i placed the gaurd counter on sangan and he attacked sangan with a better monster, I removed the gaurd counter and he said I would still take battle damage. Is this true?

yes the monster is destroyed after damage calculation. because damage is applied first, your monster can survive the attack while u still take damage. declare attack--->damage step--->monster destroyed by battle
