What's a synchro deck?

Can an old school Yugioh deck still hold its own nowadays?

• i haven't played Yugioh since my early high school days, but the other day at a church get-to-gether thingy, i saw some random dudes playing yugioh and i was like hey i used to play that. but they had all sorts of crazy looking cards (black/white cards... crazy stuff, i think they are called xyz and synchro or some madness, and they can tune or something, idk it all went over my head) so i got to reminiscing and pulled out my old deck later on and i said to my self what if...... so my question is can an old school deck compete with the new yugioh decks or is my deck just crap now? in essence would theez kids kill me if i tried to play with em or do i still have a chance? this here is my deck (i consider it a defensive fiend beat stick, deck. or something like that) i added some new cards i didn't have back in the day just for the kicks (and i had some extra $$$ lying around), but nothing of these new crazy cards, their just to confusing for me. Total cards (46) Monsters (23) 1 Archfiend Empress 1 Invader of Darkness 1 Dark Necrofear 1 Evil Hero Malicious Edge 1 Dark Ruler Ha Des 1 Caius the Shadow Monarch 1 Great Maju Garzett 2 Giant Orc 1 Slate Warrior 3 Card Guard 3 Archfiend Soldier 1 Stygian Street Patrol 1 Emperor Sem 1 Dark Jeroid 1 Wall of Illusion 1 Winged Minion 2 Grave Squirmer Spell/Traps (23) 2 Draining Shield 1 Widespread Ruin 1 Magic Cylinder 1 Hate Buster 1 Dark Illusion 2 Dark Bribe 1 Dust Tornado 1 Mystical Space Typhoon 1 Compulsory Evacuation Device 1 Smashing Ground 1 Axe of Despair 2 Solidarity 1 The Gates of Dark World 1 Burden of the Mighty 1 Darkworld Shackles 1 Nightmare Wheel 1 Metal Reflect Slime 1 Solemn Wishes 1 Spell Absorption 1 Monster Reborn so ya that's my deck! whats the word, would this still hold a chance nowadays or is it pure rubbish?

  Sorry, but without the newer, Synchro cards and tuner monsters you would get crushed by most people. D: For starters, your deck doesn't seem to have a "theme". Just a mix of random cards, which although it can be good, against a newer deck it's going to get crushed. I mean in the newer decks, you will get your 2500-4000 ATK monster on the field with support with whatever effect/synergy/strat your running around turn 2, maybe turn 3 if your unlucky with your first draw. There is no more "Tributing" anymore, only syncroing which is much more effective. Games also last like, 10 turns, /maybe/ now. And also, remember to limit your deck to exactly 40 cards. 41 is to many.
