How to implement a relative timer in a game?

On Yahoo Chess how does the timer work? I just played a game where my opponents timer ran out, but he won.?

  • I was playing chess on Yahoo Chess and there was a timer. My opponents timer ran out, but game play continued. He had it set to 10 minutes with a 1 second interval. After his timer ran out, he proceeded to beat me. I thought he was going to lose when time ran out!

There is considerable room for error when playing chess with a timer on the internet. You must remember the time factor of each players computer, his/her internet provider's speed, and so forth. It can be very frustrating when what happened to you does happen. Now, if you were ahead in time by a considerable amount, say, 25 seconds or so, and he still continued until your time ran out, then you've been hacked. Bottom line: don't count on the clocks on Yahoo.
