How can I convince my mother to play chess with me?

  • I'm 13 and I really would like to play chess, but I can't. I have no siblings to play chess with and my father is always at work, so my mother is my only option (my friends don't like chess and nobody in my family is willing to learn when they visit). Whenever I ask my mother to play, she always tells me that she doesn't want to. I do not know how to convince her to play. I have already tried explaining to her how it makes us both think and can improve our IQ's, but she doesn't consider it. So, how can I convince my mother to play chess with me? P.S. I prefer playing with the actual board and chess pieces, not online. Thanks!

    If your mom really doesnt want to play then she proly won't. however you can still find (depending on where you live) lots of other sources to play. Most chess stores host tournaments or clubs for people of all ages where you can play and learn from a variety of different people. Check online for stores in your area, any major metropolitan area should have a couple. If its too far for you to go guilt your mom into driving you by saying she didnt want to play so its your only option. Above all just keep trying, chess is a wonderful game and i'm glad people of your age group are still interested in learning.

That's a tight spot. As you know, it will not work very well unless your opponent wants to play, and enjoys the game. Look for a community facility such as 'The Boys and Girls Club'. It is a safe place that could give you options for locating opponents. (This won't work very well if you do not live in town/near town) Good luck. Don't give up.

Since you have no one willing to play with I'd suggest getting an electronic chess computer like this one with pieces: http://www.chesshouse.com/Obsidian_Advanced_Electronic_Chess_p/b1016.htm Makes a good substitute when there's no one else willing to play can take it out any time you want.
