How do you play yourself in chess?

  • I want to be able to practice chess by playing blitz games in my mind (blind fold style) against myself. A problem arizes. It is probably not too difficult to learn how to play blindfold chess...but the question is, how do you play yourself in chess? I have problems doing this. I guess this is partially due to my style of thinking (my move mentality usually goes like this...this move doesnt lose me anything, and, if my opponent doesnt see this nifty tactic, i win a piece). However, this doesnt work toward winning when you play yourself since you know all your tactics. Does anyone know of any resources, or maybe advice that you can give me to help me learn to play myself in chess.

    The skill is worth acquiring if you play in events where adjournments are involved. You can use the time you have before the second session and resumption of the game to try out various moves that the opponent might try and how you would reply if they did. (But you don't have to do that in your head, you can move the pieces around on a board.) You need to develop tactics that win material even if your opponent DOES see what you are up to, then your problem about not being able to surprise yourself disappears. Your goal must be to win against best play.

The best way to improve your chess skills is by constant practice with different kinds of people who each have different kinds of moves. However, if there's no one around and you're left to yourself, the best ways to practice are by: 1.) ...increasing your knowledge and understanding of the game. Read books written and analysis by expert chess players. There a lot of analysis on chess games on the Internet and newspapers. 2.) ...studying new openings, variations and moves. Buy a book about openings and, compare the opening in that book to your own opening. See both the strengths and weaknesses of the opening in the book and your opening. 3.) ...play against AI(Artificial Intelligence) players. You can find these AI on cell phone games, play stations, computers and other electronic devices. 4.) ...if ever you have notated your past chess games, bring them out and analyze your moves. Look for blunders, remember them and, promise yourself to not repeat them again. P.S. These are just a few tips. I hope I have helped you.

haha if you want to get better, its much better playing against other people. if you cant and try to play against yourself, try to start off with different openings, sicilian, kings/queens gambit declined/accepted, etc. you must also think further into the game and look to develop pieces ratehr than just looking to take other pieces. good players try to get more pieces AND better positions. an undeveloped rook sitting on a8 trapped by your own knight and pawn cant do jack squat. best of luck.

Traps are all very well, and it is pleasant when they succeed, but you will win more games by always playing the best move than by playing an inferior move that has a trick to it, and that you can do when you play against yourself. I like Lasker's definition of "best move," the one most disagreeable to the opponent. I agree heartily that you will learn fastest playing against actual competition, but trying different moves against oneself is not a bad way to learn an opening variation.

believe me the best way to learn how to play chess is to play against real people or against the computer , and try to analize your games after you lose

I have played (chess) against myself. when you are white make the best possible move for white. when you are black make the best possible move for balck.
