What is your favorite board game? And do you buy new or look for vintage versions of your favorite games?
-
I am thinking of getting Scrabble. My ex absconded with my old game and contacting him for it would release the gates of hell (just kidding), so I'm looking for a new Scrabble. Should I get a vintage version or just buy a new one? Which is best - Deluxe, regular or Travel? Also, what are some other good board games? I only have ever played Scrabble, Candyland, Monopoly, and Boggle. Also, if you prefer vintage - where do you find them?

Answer:
Scrabble is my favorite board game. I highly recommend the Diamond Anniversary Edition for a general board and the Folio edition which is easier to take with you. Other board games to try: Chess Checkers Backgammon Othello Go Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Shogi (Japanese Chess) I've had to buy imports for the Asian board game sets. Chess, Checkers, Backgammon is much nicer to have a dedicated high-quality board for each.

I think my favorite board games are Scrabble and Monopoly. I prefer the vintage version of all classic board games (although I did just recently buy The Beatles Monopoly) but that's just me. Really, just go to a bunch of different thrift stores, there's bound to be at least one of the classic games out there. Hope I helped :)

"To most people, board games are Monopoly, Scrabble, or Risk. The truth is there is a much larger catalog of board games out there, almost none of which are available at Wal-Mart." http://www.bigbadbot.com/CABG/Designer_Games.html There are tons of great games out there above and beyond the mass-marketed stuff americans have thrived on for the past decades. While most americans are busy playing these "classics", trivia games, DVD games, video games, etc., game designers in Europe have come up with hundreds of other fantastic games! Why not give Ticket to Ride or Settlers of Catan a try, or one of the many others that have been nominated for game of the year? Many are relatively simple to learn and can be much more enjoyable! http://www.boardgamegeek.com can be a great reference for many games you have never heard of but should give a try. Or take a look at some of the other recent nominees/winners of "Spiel des Jahres" (Game of the Year) award - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiel_des_Jahres
