boardgamegeek.com is the best place, but you should reconsider buying a board game as a gift for your friend. If they're a gamer, they'll probably already have a fair number of the top games on boardgame geek. Even if they are, there are several different styles of board games, and unless you know which style(s) of games your friend likes, you could end up giving 'em a clunker. I say this as a gamer who has received some terrible games as gifts from very well-intentioned people. Maybe a gift certificate from your local board game store would be better? Note: Disregard any answer from anybody who recommends Monopoly as a good game.
