What size squares would i use for a glass chess board?

im in a glass shop and i need to do something for art class and i want to make a chess board out of glass or mirror. the biggest chess peice is 1 3/8" on the base. i was wondering what a good size would be for the squares? please help

The biggest chess piece is 1 3/8" on the base. The chess board is 8×8 square. Best dimensions for your glass chess board, including a border, are: 15 inches ×15 inches.
