How many different squares can be found on a chess board?

Question about a chess board?

  • I have a question about a chess board. I have already found the perfect wood peices that I want to use on my new board. The problem is I would like a board that looks like the ones they use in GrandMaster tournaments. I was wanting to know if anyone could tell me of a good one.( 2 and 1/4 inch squares if possible) Thanks!

There is a selection on the USCF site (United States Chess Federation). The kind of board you will like kind of relates to the pieces you like. If you like varnished shiny pieces you will probably get a similar board, although I don't like the glare when playing, and prefer satin finish on both. Some wood boards show more obvious grain than others, etc. In addition to appearance, consider how you will use the board; will it stay at home or will it travel with you to clubs, matches, tournaments etc. Weight, whether it folds or not, durability, etc, will matter a great deal if it needs to travel. You might even want one display board and one light weight folding (or rollup) traveling board.

I myself prefer mahogany and maple wooden chess board. Brown and white squares,also no electronic boards to technical but that's just me.

http://www.chess.com has staunton chessboards which is the finest quality boards in the world also you should fo to FIDE and look for boards on sale some staunton and other high quality boards cost 100s of dollars so it depends on how badly you want them...one time i saw a staunton board for sale for $624!!! so i said "aw the hell with it,i'll stick to the board i already have"
