What D&D Board Game Should I Buy?

  • I've read reviews of all three D&D Adventure series of tabletop board games. Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon & the one based on Drizz't Do'Urden. I've been wanting to buy a D&D Board Game for a long time, specifically for the impressive amount of dungeon tiles and miniatures it offers to help expand my own D&D adventures. But I also cannot deny the playability of just being able to bust out the game itself and use the resources therein. My problem is, which to choose? I think unless it is followed with a strong recommendation, the board game based on Drizz't is my least wanted pick. As I Have no interest in Salvatores books or learning anything about the details of his adventure as there is no nostalgia value there for me. It might as well just be any other D&D Board Game where the characters come pre-named preventing me from truly being able to put myself into my heroes shoes. However, I can see benefits to either Ashardalon or Ravenloft. On the former, it seems like it is more of a traditional dungeon crawl with the very real threat of a Dragon capable of wiping you out at any moment. On the latter, it seems to have a very unique survival horror feel to a board game, which might offer more interesting flavor as opposed to your standard hack and slash. I simply cannot choose. I don't want to end up buying Ravenloft and wishing I bought Ashardalon. But I just don't know where to turn. So I guess the question remains, should I buy Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, or is the Adventures of Drizz't a cut above the rest enough to warrant me buying the "cheaper" of the three Board Game options?

    of the 3, Wrath of Ashardalon is the best 'single purchase'. Castle Ravenloft is the first, and least developed of the three. Wrath has the campaign rules, and the large rooms ("Dens") which add alot to the system. Legend of Drizzt's big draw is...Drizzt and co. its actually alittle step back rules-wise from Wrath.

My friends and I have the Castle Ravenloft game, it's pretty fun and the miniatures are done quite nicely. I'd suggest that, but it's biased since I haven't really played the other ones.

From the reviews I've heard the Drizz't game is the most streamlined of the three. Castle Ravenloft is fun, but we all died REALLY quickly. There were just too many high level monsters spawning too quickly. I haven't played Ashardalon, but there's a good review of it on the Myriad Games podcast, and they liked it a lot, I think they preferred it over Ravenloft, but I don't remember all the details. And the Dice Tower Podcast recently mentioned the Drizz't game, I think in their most recent episode but it might have been the one just before it(it's either 232 or 233). They talk about it and mention how well it mixes in with the previous two games, and that Drizz't and the other characters in the new game are more powerful than the characters in the previous games and so they're a little easier to use to get further in the game. After looking on the Dice Tower page it's in episode 233. Oh, and it looks like Myriad Games did two podcasts on the D&D Board Games so far, one for Ravenloft, one for Ashardalon. You can listen to their opinions in the links below. I think if I get any of them I'll be getting Drizz't, not because I'm a fan of Salvatore, I haven't read any of the books, but because I like the idea of being able to fight the monsters and win, but I really like the Ravenloft setting so I might just get that instead.
