The purpose is the put your opponents king in checkmate; a position where the king or other pieces cannot move to keep the king from being captured.

Playing chess is like your living style. K, it's simple but takes space if I try to explain everything here. If u can get someone to explain it to you physically, it would be the best. If not, don't worry, for starters u need to know the rules about how each chess piece(the things you play with on board) moves, n go on to understand how to get good at it I.e not just playin', but playing well. play with someone who knows how to play it. The best way to know it is by playing it. but be sure to know the moves of each character. then you can read books for advanced techniques therefrom.
