Chess. I know a person who learned chess all by himself, studying with books, and later he won a countrywide championship. It's helps sharpen your mind a lot, trust me on that. Good luck! PS: I know this is not exactly what you wanted to hear, since you wanted to hear about a one person game, but I had to object to the whole "If you play by yourself you will never advance."

"If you play by yourself you will never advance" For one, that is not entirely true. It's true that you can only learn so much from yourself, but it will still brush up on your strategy. Secondly, play chess online. There are tons of free online chess sites. I do believe one of them is Chess.com (Which looks pretty informative too). There is really no better option than chess imo. Games like Risk teach you tactics but don't necessarily teach a wide range of strategy. Thirdly... I have found that it isn't just strategy that sharpens your mind. I think the #1 thing that sharpens your mind is Algebra. Yup boring 'ol no fun Mathematics. You would be surprised what solving and simplifying algebraic expressions can do for your mind. Increasing the speed at which you solve these problems also makes you think much quicker. For example What percentage of Y is X if Y is 52. X = Y - 13 x 3 Or in a real life situation What is the probability of drawing a spade from a standard playing card deck. 25% You see, they are the same thing.

For solo play, I would much prefer puzzles over games. My recommendation? Get a book of Kakuro puzzles - or if you prefer, you can play on your computer. See the link below. Hope that helps!

The Nintendo DS has games like "Brain Age" which are simply a series of mini-games that are targeted to get you to sharpen your mind. Of course if you don't own a Nintendo DS it more than likely would not be worth purchasing one for.

There are few tactics games better than chess, and fortunately there are plenty of chess programs you can play against, even handheld ones. They won't have the strategic diversity a real person will have, but they're good for practice. You should visit a Game Stop or Game Crazy store or some other electronics and computer games seller, like Best Buy, and have them help you pick out a good chess program for you. They may also be able to recommend some other good strategy games for your enjoyment and mental augmentation. Brain Age was suggested by another poster and is a great choice, and there are other Nintendo DS-based games that give your brain good exercise. If you are looking for single-player board games and card games with which to sharpen your mind, find a good game store and peruse their collection of European-style games. (They are also called Euro games or German board games.) Many such games have rules for single players, and each such game has its own rules and strategy. If you use this method for a cranial workout, however, you will probably need to purchase several different games so you don't bore yourself by playing the same game over and over. Good luck! - LJS
