What are good chess openings on short notice when playing at queen odds?

  • My chess team is playing on Thursday. We're 41-0, and we finally found a school that would play us... but only if we took our queens off the board first. Anyone got some tips, or a website to look at?

    I don't wanna say something sound fishy..but, Well, no offense it does. I was on one of the strongest chess teams in the state while in high school and would *never* agree to playing at queen odds. A pawn, maybe, a minor piece is extremely pushing it. But a queen? I doubt you will be able to find any advice on such a thing, cause it simply has to be extremely rare for serious players to agree to such a thing. As for strategy, if you are in fact 41-0, you should know the basic principals. Development of you minor pieces and early castling is going to be paramount. I would also say avoiding trades, every piece traded off the board is going to make their queen all the more powerful, and I am not sure you can defeat that.

If you're gonna give Queen odds I strongly suggest you throw in 2 more pawns as well (the a and h pawns) - make it sound as if you;re being generous with odds. The real reason is so you can get 2 open files to launch an attack depending on which side of the board your opponent castle on, develop your rooks (most powerful piece since your Queen is gone) and you don;t have to worry abt silly attacks beginning with Qh4 or pins from Bh5. You could also remove the c or f pawns as an alternative, since it'll allow you to castle and give your rook open files again.

There isn't an opening for this, just guide lines. I would develop to control the center, but not allow it to be opened up at any cost, the Queen is at her best in an open position. Seems you'll need to keep the center locked and attack the king as soon as possible regardless on which wing they castle. Avoid piece trades, that will make the Queen even more powerful. You are playing for mate via complications mixed with a flank pawn storm. I would play some thing like a closed Bishops opening. Also, seems you'll need to wait to see what side they castle on first and then castle on opposite sides. That will help protect your king and pawn storm. Probably the best thing to do would be for you to play against a chess engine giving Queen odds and see what it comes up with?

Wow, uh, I've never heard of a game at queen odds. That's kinda cool that you guys are that good that they'll only play you at queen odds. Um, I like the Barcza Opening for white and the Pirc and the King's Indian for black because they are very defensive. That should help with the fact that you don't have a queen.
