What is a croupier? Where can I learn to be a croupier?

Advice from all croupier's / casino's workers please?

• I'm going to be stating a course in a couple of months to learn how to be a croupier and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on things I could practice / learn beforehand as I currently have time on my hands and I would like to use it wisely. This is my first time posting a question so I may of not made the question as clear as possible, I have been told to learn the hierarchy of poker hands as an example and I was wondering if there is anything else like roulette multiplication tables ? If so where would I find them ? I would appreitiate sensible answers only :) thanks in advance

  I'm going to assume you will be learning table games (since you mentioned roulette). Where I work, table games and poker are separate departments, so this posting is advice to help you deal the three main games: blackjack, roulette, and craps. Learning poker hands will be very beneficial in dealing "carnival games" (three card poker, let it ride, texas hold'em bonus, etc.). Blackjack Check handling, shuffling, counting to 21, and paying a bet 3:2 are the primary skills to be practiced. Check handling includes proving a stack of twenty chips and sizing into bets. Get yourself some casino style poker chips and learn to break a stack of twenty down into four stacks of five and five stacks of four (try not to look at the chips). Then practice sizing into 2,3,4,etc. chips by banging into the bet and cutting off the stack with your finger. Then practice using the other hand. Do not thumb cut, ever! I realize this probably makes very little sense to you right now, but go to your local casino and watch what the blackjack dealers do. Hopefully you will see what I mean. Shuffling will be learned in class. Once you learn, practice the six deck shuffle until you are able to do it under three minuets. Practicing counting is also a good idea. Take a deck of cards and flip them while counting out loud (up to 21 of course, then start over). Its a good idea to become familiar with basic strategy and practice accordingly. http://www.blackjackinfo.com/bjbse.php Actual blackjack payouts are 3:2. You must learn blackjack payouts. You take a bet, divide it in half and add that half to the bet. For example, a $10 blackjack pays $15. Main payouts you need to memorize: $15 - $22.50 $25 - $37.50 $35 - $52.50 $70 - $105 $75 - $112.50 Roulette Main skills include spinning the ball, pushing stacks, and calculating payouts. Outside of class, you can really only practice payouts. Inside bets of roulette: Straight ups - 35:1 Splits - 17:1 Corners - 8:1 Streets - 11:1 Line - 5:1 (6:1 on the zero line) Memorize the straight up and splits from 1 to 20. A trick for straight ups is divide the bet in half, multiply it by 7, add a zero. Example, 6 straight up - 3 x 7 = 21. $6 pays $210. Flashcards with roulette payouts is usually a good idea.
