Why is the lottery a bad idea?

  • Answer:

As a return on investment for the lottery player, they are a bad idea. As a source of income for the government agencies that run lotteries, they are very helpful as it is a steady source that would otherwise be derived through other forms of taxes.

Why do people assume things that aren't true? Who said the lottery is a bad idea? Anyone who has seen a few of my answers knows that I bash the lottery every chance I get, but I have never said it's a "bad idea". The truth is, if the lottery went away there would still be lotteries, but they'd be the illegal ones similar to the Numbers game that used to be run by the Mob. At least the lottery is run by official, government designated companies. The lottery is a tax on the poor and on the ignorant. It is the worst bet on the planet. Still, it is a necessary evil. If the lottery companies could no longer offer this horrible bet, someone else would.

I think it's a bad idea because it make the government look like hypocrites. They run a gambling system that basically rips off the poor and ignorant people. Then they go off and make a skill game like online poker illegal. A game where people can actually make a living at.
