How random are card shuffling machines at casinos?

Do card shuffling machines arrange the cards in the casinos favor?

  • Answer:

No - They really don't need to. The odds for any game are in the casinos favor, that's why they ALWAYS make money. You can reduce the casinos advantage by understanding and knowing how to play the games.

I have been in casino management for over 20 years, and I can assure you that the shufflemasters do the best they can working with a Random Number Generator to have a completely random shuffle. These machines are tested by Gaming Agents in every state where they are used, and you can rest assured that if there was something not right it would have been discovered by now. Sadly, casinos already have a license to print money (more or less) so they don't need the bad publicity or public outcry that would come from rigging games. The companies who sell these products are publicly traded as well, and certainly it would not be in their best interest to be selling a machine that defrauded players anymore then the rules and probabilities of the game already allow.

No the card shuffling machines don't do this, they randomly shuffle the cards and would do so better than a dealer shuffle in my opinion. As the others have said, the casinos don't need to use dodgy tactics such as rigged shuffling machines in order to make money, they payout to the winners and they make plenty more than what they pay out from the losers and the people who simply can't walk away. Also, i think it would be rather difficult for the machine to arrange the cards into an order of the casinos favor anyway because in order to achieve this the machine would have to read the cards that it is shuffling so that it knew which cards to place where in the deck order and the cards and machines aren't that hi tech.

"Sadly, casinos already have a license to print money (more or less) so they don't need the bad publicity or public outcry that would come from rigging games. " Plus the potential loss of the Gaming license too. Casinos are not built on the bankrolls of people who win. Casinos don't need to cheat. The odds of table games favor the casinos. There are people who hit a good run and quit while they are ahead. The last time I was in Reno I hit a great run playing 3 Card Poker. I had the common sense to walk away with my winnings. I don't know how many people walk away. But given the number of casinos all over America I'd say very few walk away. Two years ago I was in Vegas and my boss hit a great run playing 21 at $100 to $500 per hand. After one night he was up $3,000. At the end of the trip he was down $3,000.

It's not the shuffle of the cards that makes the casinos win, it's the design of the game itself.. poker is the only game I think that is really fair.. roulette - number 0 edge blackjack - player's deal first (chance of bust) baccarat - simply a "coin toss" chance etc.. it doesn't really mean you can't win, but it really is more of luck..

As already mentioned, they don't need to (well at least the legitimate ones). The machines actually do a better job than doing it by hand (all things considering), and the trick that the deck needs to be shuffled a certain around of times before it is considered random. I believe the number is 7 shuffles.

Yes, they absolutely shuffle the cards in the casinos favor. However, as mentioned before that is by nature the odds of the game itself. The shuffle machines do shuffle randomly.
