Do you think luck is more prevalent than skill in poker?

What do you guys think ? Is poker about luck or skills?

  • For me, I think poker is about both. A person can have a lot of luck, but they don't necessarily win. A person can have a lot of skillz but they don't necessarily win also. The pro arguments for the game being about skill includes: better cards reading, knowing when to bluff, when to call, when to fold, how much to raise, when to limp, cards probability for a limp, preflop dominance, traps, and so on. A nother way to say that Poker is not all about luck and that skillz play a bigger part in the game is that "u can play someone who skilled and that they will always win more game then you". So what you guys think? Is the game more about luck or skillz?

  • Answer:

The shorter the time frame, the more poker is about luck. If the best player in the world played the worst player for just one hand, luck would almost totally dominate. But expand the time frame to a lifetime and the distribution of cards would be roughly the same for each player. Both would get roughly the same number of pocket aces, pocket kings, and trash hands. The good player however, would be able to extract the most value out of his cards by winning more on his good hands and losing less on his weak hands. So, assuming players play the game long enough, I would definitely say that although poker contains variance (or what many call luck), skill dominates the game more the longer it is played.

I'm a poker player. The longer you play, the more it becomes skill and the less it becomes luck. In the short term, poker is highly based on luck. If I play 500 hands of poker at the level I usually play, I have about a 60% chance of coming out ahead. If I play 5000 hands of poker, I have about an 85% chance of coming out ahead. If I play 50,000 hands, I will be ahead every time. Poker in the short term is subject to luck, but just like anything, you will regress to your mean rate of return long term, which is determined by your skill level. Your quote is incorrect that good players will always win. Bad players win individual games and hands very frequently. In fact, even in 1 on 1 games at the highest levels, the top players only win about 55-58% of the time. Anyone can win a hand, but to win consistently over a period of weeks to months or more requires skill.

Well, folding is a big part of poker. If no one folds, then it's all luck.

I will have to say both. Same for Black Jack.

it is very important to have poker skills, as the song goes "know when to hold them, know when to fold them". but a small amount of luck goes a long way, if your skilled. if you depend on luck, you're dead in the water

I agree with you. To be a master in Poker or any competitive games like that, you need to know how to counter an opponent's lucky hand. You need to make bluffs or just simply fold early on so they win hardly anything.

mostly skill, some luck. Yes its all about the cards you get which has a lot to do with luck...but knowing your opponents and knowing how to act and when to bluff/not bluff -- thats all skill and thats what wins games!
