SCRATCH OFF LOTERY TICKETS, A SCAM..?, what do you think?
-
Here is the latest scam with scratch off lottery tickets! It's being done by crooked cashiers, store owners etc etc... When you have a winning scratch off rub off lottery ticket and you bring it to the store to cash it in if you watch them person who validates it through the lottery machine if you didnt completly scratch off the ticket all the way at the bottom the clerk will scratch more off and the reason being below the actual game part is a series of numbers and after the clerk scans the bar code on the back of the ticket he needs to enter these numbers into the machine to validate your winning ticket to pay you, now here is how the scam works the dishonest clerk gently rubs away the bottom part of the scratch off ticket and he makes it look like natural scratches from being pulled through the lottery box like just a few lines but enough for him to get the validating number he needs but where to the unsuspecting buyer it wouldnt raise any suspision since the actual game still is covered and cant be seen, and then once he has this number he runs it through the machine and if the ticket comes up as a winner he buys it and if it doesnt he leaves it in the rack for a victom to buy the loosing ticket! Be carefull if you see a ticket with some small scratches on it don't chance it DONT BUY IT!

Answer:
Actually, retailers don't really make that much from having lottery machines and scratch off tickets in their stores. Per $300 pack of scratch offs they sell, they profit $15. And they get a nominal amount to have machines leased in the store. But yeah, I've seen it happen. Some unscrupulous clerks will take some tickets and scratch them off. They are the type that won't last long at their job, but I've worked with some of these scum when I was in school. Of course, for every 1 of these types, there are 10's of thousands who just think the lottery is a pain to work with (as a clerk, anyway) and won't bother wasting their time. If you really wanna buy scratch off lottery, and you are THAT worried about it, just buy them from a machine or a busy store.

What do I think? I think you made this up, and nobody has actually done this to you. No lottery clerk is stupid enough to try this. Why not? First of all, most people already understand what the codes are all about. Second of all, a store owner makes tons of money off lottery sales - they aren't going to risk their license by trying to pull something off like this. Lastly, they wouldn't risk being arrested for fraud. Again - I find it extremely unlikely that you actually saw this happen. Could someone do this? Sure, but they would need to have 2 things going for them to pull it off. #1 - they would need to be an idiot. #2 - they would need to find an idiot that wouldn't notice part of the scratch ticket already scratched off.
