What is a matinee ticket?

What is the policy on a store checking lottery ticket and keeping the ticket after it's been checked?

  • I needed to check if I'd won anything on the lottery. Due to the fact I knew I'd be going shopping later on in the evening I decided not to check my ticket online but to get it checked at the lottery counter at my local ASDA supermarket. When I gave the sales woman the ticket, she scanned it and then informed me I'd not won anything and proceeded to discard of my ticket in her store's trash recepticle. The question I have is, how do I know that my ticket wasn't a winning ticket? I could not see what her machine told her. For all I know I could be a winner but the store worker has my ticket and can just pick it out the trash, give it to a family member or friend and have them cash it in for her. During these economically challenging times, I wouldn't doubt this can happen. If someone had to weigh up their job at the supermarket or a huge cash win, c'mon? Someone please shed light on this one!

What your talking about has been quite an ordeal. Here in Oregon there is a screen that faces the customer and you see what the cashier sees. The cashier returns your ticket with a computer slip which tells you that was not a winner. Or. How much it is worth. Some states run fake winning tickets to catch those phony cashiers. And it is amazing how many pull off this scam. Just to be safe (in the future) go to a place where you can see the screen and see that the cashier is scanning the ticket you gave to them. That's another scam.. They will scan a ticket they know is not a winner and check yours later.. Knowing the cashier helps also. If your talking about keno, lotto. powerball ect there should be an electronic scanner you can check them yourself before going to the cashier.

Its your ticket, so you should have told her you wanted it back, and verified online when you had a chance. If you're that paranoid about it, just check it for yourself in the future and save yourself the anxiety.

97 is right, and you are right. If you ask for your ticket back, the teller should give you your ticket back. She should also show you a print out (or at least a screen) that shows you that your ticket, in fact, was a losing ticket. There ARE unscrupulous people out there that will try and steal your winning tickets. Not many, but there are some. Also, as 97 pointed out, you really should know whether or not your ticket is a winner on your own. If you don't even know the rules of the game, and you don't even understand what constitutes a winning ticket, then you really shouldn't be playing. Lottery tickets are already the worst bet on the planet. It makes it all the worse if you can't even tell if you have a winner.

You didn't say which lottery you were playing but there are numerous reasons why your retailer should not have discarded "Your" ticket after checking it. Number one and the most obvious is that it's yours, they need your permission to dispose of it. Secondly there are several lotteries that have events taking place after the draw itself.....Euromillions release the details of the Millionaire Raffle anything form 1-2 hours after the draw takes place, Health Lottery has a Magic Monday bonus where your ticket can be used to claim a bonus on the Monday following the draw. And thirdly, you as the player should always double check your results, don't just leave it down to the retailer. There have been many instances in the US where greedy retail workers have tried to steal winning tickets for themselves - and once they have the ticket then the Lottery are legally are bound to pay them as the ticket holder even if they are found guilty of theft. You are then left with a long legal battle through the courts to take control of the winning funds - that's if the person hasn't already spent them or hidden the money away. Just remember this one simple fact - the moment the results are announced your ticket can jump from being a worthless piece of paper to being worth more than many of our high street brands. Would you let a ticket worth that much out of your hands for a second?

It's absolutely okay for you to ask for the ticket back! In regards to a "policy," for keeping the ticket, I would say that it is not normal for a person to just keep it like that. I would be just as weary as you are being. Here's an easy way to get the ticket back if this happens in the future: You: Hi could you please check my ticket and see if it's a winner? Cashier: Sure, hand it over. Nope, not a winner. You: Oh thank you. Hey, could I get that ticket back? I keep it to prove losses in case I win... Helps with taxes! Cashier: Here you go!
