What makes a brilliant poker player?

Answer:
Primarily luck. I'd rather be lucky than good at hold 'em. It requires patience - good cards generally don't just come your way, you have to wait for them. When you do get your cards, you have to play them well. Playing your opponent is far more important than playing your cards. You do really need to be good at maths (outs etc.) as well. You might have someone going all in and you look down at pocket Aces and you call, and they could hit a set, a flush, a straight, or even something as s**t as two pair - sometimes making the right decision isn't enough, but there'll always be another hand.

A sharp mind for numbers and the ability to keep very stoic when under pressure. If you can't keep track of numbers and probability when there's lots of money riding, and also not give away your emotions, that's what makes a really good poker player.

I'd agree with all that but there's still no way to guarantee you win. All you can do is play with the odds, rather than against them but the game can really do your brain in especially over long periods. Be cautious of online poker, most systems are rigged to create action.

Luck goes a long way. I had a pair of aces cracked by 9 5 off suit in texas hold em. Sometimes you just gotta get lucky. Also remeber probability and you playing the board not just the other players hand.

Self control is probably the biggest factor of a great poker player. Bankroll management, keeping your cool after a bad beat, understanding that it is OK to end a session while losing because there will always be a poker game another day, and understanding your limits are all a part of self control.

Concentration, patience, intelligence and endurance. The ability to spot a weakness or advantagous situation. Complete knowledge of the game, tendancies and odds. Endurance without tilting when running bad is a huge edge over most poker players. Also these days reading the pro books is a must.

It's a lot less about numbers than people think. That's part of it but it's more pattern recognition than anything which ultimately leads to assessing your chances better. This is the combination of the strength of your hand and the perceived strength of the hands of opponents. Another key element especially in tournament play is the ability to assess your situation and knowing when to take risks and when not to. King Cobra Poker http://kingcobrapoker.com
