How many casinos are there in Monaco?

Good arguments with casinos?

  • Okay, so we have this debate thing that we have to do in class about whether casinos are good or bad. Basically, there are 2 sides of the debate: those who are with or against casinos. I'm in the with side and we have to get convincing arguments that demonstrate the good effects and impacts of casinos in society, economy, etc. What I really need are arguments that will stand up to answer back the counter-arguments from the other side/team, they say: Casinos are addicting and can lead an individual to lost his job, money, have family problems, commit suicide, etc. What arguments can hold up and can beat this statement? What I know is casinos offers jobs and help the development of a state. But what else are there? Examples are needed if necessary. Thanks! :-)

You cannot disprove addiction, you can only downplay it. Gambling addiction is a problem, but only a small percentage of the gambling population becomes addicted. Because gambling addictions are 100% psychological, it is far less addicting than other legal activities such as smoking (where almost 100% of smokers are addicted) and drinking. Both of those vices present the same level of negatives and virtually none of the positives that come with bringing casinos into a town, yet they are legal and accepted in the community. Casinos create tax revenues, and produce jobs. It's also a tourist industry, meaning it brings outside people into the community (who bring it outside dollars), which not only benefits the casinos, but also benefits other local businesses such as restaurants, shopping, hotels, etc. Inevitably, they will probably also argue that casinos bring crime and increase crime rates. You can discredit that by simply stating that casinos increase the population (both permanent residents and tourists), and more people always means more crime. Crime rates are also artificially inflated since the tourist population which did not even exist before brings in crime but does not increase the population (in other words, the per capita crime goes up because the tourist flow is not counted towards the crime population index. Make sense?). The argument should be that the net benefits to the community outweigh the negatives associated with gambling addiction. You can probably back it up with numbers, but you can google as well as I can. Good luck.

For a long time now casinos have suffered incredibly bad press, obviously in times gone by illegal 'joints' ran by unsavory characters, staffed by loan sharks and hookers all lend to a by gone image. These days casinos are ran under strict legislation, with high levels of protocol and stiff penalties for compliance failure. The employment argument is well know but the most damaging argument remains the gambling addiction argument. Yes there are people that will succumb to gambling as a vice but that statistic is incredibly low. There have been studies as to what percentage of a population are pathological gamblers, currently around 3% of the adult population. This means that 97% treat and enjoy casinos as an entertainment that creates jobs and boosts the economy ect. What we must consider is that the aforementioned mentioned 3% will gamble no matter what whether it's in a casino or rain drops on a window pane. So if we close all the casinos what will happen? Well we'll probably return to the first scenario of the loan sharks etc as people will always gamble. Now the big debate is should we localize casinos as currently communal income is now heading to the pockets of your nearest tribal reservations. .

The casino also creates hundreds of jobs. The few who lose theirs are more than balanced out. You could use the addiction argument for cigarettes and alcohol as well, so it's not really a valid argument unles you also want to ban cigarettes and alcohol. So when someone uses that argument, ask if they also propose a ban on alcohol and tobacco. If they say no, then they can't use the same argument to ban casinos.

Good job, Vegas Matt. Here's another angle to consider: What would your opponents do? Ban all casinos? Look up "Prohibition" and read about what the United States did in the early 20th century. Long story short, they banned alcohol. This caused 2 things to happen against the US government. #1 - they had to SPEND money in order to fight all the illegal bootlegging. #2 - they LOST revenue because they couldn't tax any of the illegal alcohol. They finally accepted the fact that people WILL drink, no matter what they say. They finally realized that they might as well not waste all their resources fighting it, and they might as well tax it to make money. You can argue the same thing about casinos. People WILL gamble. If they outlawed every casino, it would be prohibition all over again. As a matter of fact, something similar is happening right now. There is an argument happening as to whether or not states should be able to allow on-line gambling. Currently, US citizens are pouring MILLIONS, and perhaps BILLIONS of dollars over seas in on-line gambling. The money being spent and won is NOT being taxed at all, plus the government is spending resources to fight against it. I believe that eventually the US government won't have a choice but to allow for on-line gambling in the US for that same reason.
