What is it like working at a gas station?

Scratch off addiction working in a gas station ?

  • 3 months ago I got a job at a gas station. When I started there I never, or like once every 2 weeks bought a single $2 crossword scratch off.. now, 3 months later, I'm buying several a shift, and some at different gas stations. And I am scratching them off at work.. a VERY BIG NO NO!!!!! I have to quit doing them or I am going to lose my job, and I love my job. But I can't seem to help myself. My boss has told me that I HAVE to quit playing them or I'm going to be fired and I love my job. I'm not sure how to stop playing tho. I'll get bored and instead of cleaning or doing the million and one other things I could do, I play scratch offs.

I don't understand why your boss gets upset at this? You are PAYING for every ticket you scratch, right??? As long as you are paying for every ticket you scratch, then your boss shouldn't be upset. What worries me more is that you are so addicted to these pieces of crap in the first place! Do yourself a HUGE favor and KEEP TRACK of how much you are spending and how much you are "winning". If you keep track long enough you will discover that for every dollar you're spending, you're only "winning" back around 50 cents! At a 50% payback rate, these tickets are easily the worst bet in the world! Keep track long enough and you will see that I am right. What I'm wondering is why you're even working there at all!!! You MUST end up LOSING more money than you actually make at your job!!! So basically you are PAYING money to work! This is ludicrous! Even if you're not spending quite enough where you're spending more than you make at your job, you've got to seriously be cutting into your payroll! Instead of making $10 per hour, you might be making as little as $2 per hour, depending on how much exactly you're wasting on these tickets!!! Again - this is ludicrous! ***EDIT*** FAHQ - You've been siting this "60%" over and over lately. So for every $100 that you spend, you are finding around $60 worth of winning tickets. You are STILL losing $40 for every $100 that you spend! WOW - your average is a little better than the typical average. You are STILL losing tons of money! Who knows? Maybe that still seems like a good bet to someone like you.

I worked at a gas station before, so I know what you mean when you get bored. The best thing I can tell you is that every time you feel like buying one just make yourself go clean or stock things. I had a co-worker who had that same problem and that is what they did.

Well the first and hardest step is acknowledging that you have a problem. It sounds like you've done that so now you really need a support group that can help you kick the scratcher habit. Contact Gamblers Anonymous. They can probably give you the better advice than random strangers on Yahoo. Do you have some family or friends that you can confide in that will help? And finally you may just need another job. If lottery is a serious temptation then start looking for a different job that you'll enjoy which doesn't involve selling tickets.

You CAN lose your job.. it is a breach of contract with the Lottery for you to buy tickets while on the clock.. it doesn't matter if you pay for them, the lottery can pull the machine and scratch tickets from your store and lose out on that income, that is why they will fire you before that happens.. I would not bring any cash or debit cards into the store with me while on duty.. that way there is no way you can purchase anything..let alone scratch tickets. If you must have food or a drink or something then get a friend co worker or family member that you trust and trusts you to buy it for you and pay them back after you get off work.. that way no money, no scratch tickets.. then after a while when you don't feel the need anymore, you can start bringing a debit card or cash.. or bring a credit card (last I knew you cannot buy lotto/lottery with a credit card).. that way you can still buy food/gas/drinks.

gas stations usually have cameras ...so it would be really dumb to steal or scan the tickets prior to scratching off....they don't have cause to fire you...that's unreasonable....besides your momma Obama will cut you an unemployment check.....way better than gas station job.....sure, do PDQ a favor and keep track...that's what I did...not counting my jackpots i am winning back just under 60% of my lottery ticket purchases.....for me I am only paying 40 cents for a lottery ticket .Playing the lottery is without a doubt THE best bet in the world...even better than the don't pass craps bet in california casinos.........ask PDQ to send you a link ...he is THE top contributor...knowledgeable in subject matter....I'll send you my receipts....then you decide.....and by the way, you don't have an addiction......just ask yourself everyday what you would do if you won a large payout..solve any and all of your problems....
