How do Acrobats become so flexible?

How can I become more flexible?

  • I've been in dancer for a long time now. I started out just taking tap and hip hop where flexibility wasn't really needed. I made my schools dance team last year and this year, and was just flexible enough to make JV. My kicks, leaps, and everything else are okay, but not spectacular, and since they were just good enough I never really tried to get more flexible. I want to make my Varsity dance team next year, where we will need to have at least a right heel stretch, and of course higher kicks and more flexible leaps to make the team. But I can't even do my right splits yet. I'm about 2-3 inches above the ground. I have until next June to have them down, but I would like to get them as soon as possible so I can start working on other stuff. So some questions I have are: -How long should I stretch each day? -How long should I hold my splits? -How long to I warm up before stretching? -When I am in my splits do I try keep my back straight, or put my head to my knee? ANY help with this is appreciated - Especially from dancers who weren't naturally flexible but now they are. Thanks! (:

First start with a warm up: Either jog, dance or do a couple counts of kicks (medium height-not too high or you might pull something) for about 15-20 minutes. Once you feel just a bit sweaty, begin stretching: I start by doing the old 'bend down and touch your toes' stretch. Go beyond just laying your palms on the floor, try to touch your elbows to the floor if you can. Then it's what my friend calls a "pre split" stretch. Almost like a runner's stretch. Bend your right knee down until it is at a ninety degree angle, then extend your leftt leg out behind you. Do not bend your right knee or let your left knee touch the ground. Finally, slide down into a split. (Hold each stretch until you feel sore. Use music, the TV or anything to distract you and make you hold the stretch longer. It will pay off.) Now, when you stretch your splits, you should slide down, and, at first, keep your back straight. Make sure your hips are straight, and then, lean your head down to your knee. Once you've held that position for as long as you can, turn to the right, lean down, and hold it. Repeat with your left. While you're stretching, don't forget to pay attention to what's going on. It's normal to feel sore, but if you experience pain, rest. If you pull something from overstretching, it'll take time to heal, which will slow you down. When I do this whole routine at home, it takes about 30 minutes, depending on how much time I have to spare that day or if I'm sore. Good luck!

I also wasn't flexible before taking dance. I couldn't do the splits, nothing. All I really did though was try to touch my head to my knee of each leg and hold it for about a minute. I did this everyday for about a month and one day i decided to try the splits and I did it! There are tons of other stretches, but this is the most effective. Also, go on YouTube and look up splits stretches for more ideas.

- Stretch for 15 minutes a day - hold 5 minutes in each split - warm up for 10 minutes before - do both start straight, then put your head to your knee, then put your chest beside your leg, then and only when you are down completely in all your splits and need an extra stretch lift your back leg into an attitude and try to touch your head to your toes... ps: it won't happen over night, and you will be stiff for the firat 1 week or so!

I would stretch for about 15 - 20 minutes a day but before that warm up for 10 - 15 minutes. I've really learned that the most important thing for me to do is just keep a daily routine and not overstretch. A couple summers ago I overstretched one of my legs and it set me back months.

Okay well when I started dance I wasn't very flexible but now I have both rigt left middle practice is all u need. But stretching is hard and i think the best thing is to just push down and really try hard, also in splitz if u do stretch every day then dont hold down for 10 min! it will make u sore and it will be harder to strech in the furture. Really and truly I suggest one minute to 2 tops, and don't go down to ur knee it wont help stay up straight and press ur hands down it will help push u, and always start with jazz splitz front and back first this will help! Stretch as much as u want and can in that time and do things u arent as flexible at this way if u do this until une u will 4 shore!!!!! get them.... GOOD LUCK

Getting splits aren't easy, and once you've got them, you never want to loose them! To first get your splits, start slow. Whatever you do, DO NOT force yourself into the splits, as you could seriously hurt yourself. Start each day by doing some jumps, jogging, or some other aerobic activity to warm up your muscles so you don't hurt yourself. If you don't warm up before you stretch, you could pull a muscle, tear a tendon, or tear your skin. Warm up each day for at least 20 minutes before stretching. When you begin stretching, after your warm up, start by sitting on the ground and have the bottom of your feet together in the "Butterfly" stretch. Hold this for about 3 minutes (One Song) and try to keep your knees on the ground, while trying to get your nose to your toes. Then, extend your legs out straight in front of you with flexed feet, and try to grab your feet. Hold this again for three minutes. The last stretch you should do before attempting your splits is the "V" stretch. Hold this for 3 minutes as well. After you have completed this stretch, move on to one of your splits (left or right). Get into the position for a split, and hold yourself up with your hands. Slowly lower your body into the split until you feel a tight pull. Stop lowering yourself, and hold yourself up in that position for NO LONGER than 60 seconds. Repeat the SAME stretch on the other side (the other leg). Once you have done that, move onto your straddle. Put yourself into the position of a straddle. Slowly lower yourself into the position of a straddle, then stop lowering yourself when you feel a tight pull. Hold yourself in that position for NO LONGER than 60 seconds. When you are working on getting your splits, be sure to keep your back up straight. If you bend over, you will not be stretching the right muscles to get your split. Once you have all three (3) splits (Left, right, straddle), then you can try to get your nose to your knee. If you feel a tight pull, do not go any further. Try doing this every day or every other day. It will take a while, but if you keep a constant schedule, you will be able to get your splits before June for sure. Even when you do have your splits, keep doing this every day so you will not loose them. Good luck!

-try stretching around 20-30 minutes but longer is good 2 lol -build it up! so hold it for 30 sec (Mississippi ^-^) then 40, 50 ,a minute,2 minutes,3 minutes, and so on... -warm up for around 15-20 minutes but again as long as u want -do both except don't put your head to your knee because its better to put your chest to your knee and keep your head up i was not flexible at all and it was tough but after a while u will just build up flexibility ^-^ hope i helped, good luck!

How long should I stretch each day? 20 minutes.:) -How long should I hold my splits? At first 2 minutes then eventually get to doing them for 10 minutes.:] -How long to I warm up before stretching?15 minutes. do things like run and do kicks. -When I am in my splits do I try keep my back straight, or put my head to my knee? well when you put your back straight it looks better. but if you want to actually improve fast you wanna either put your head to your knee or put your hands on your head. :) Good Luck!
