What are some decently enjoyable but well paid jobs?

What dance jobs are quite well paid?

  • I'd like to be successful when I'm older and make alot of money through dance, what jobs are well paid that use dance?

  • Answer:

Very, very, very few. Check out my other answer regarding dancer's incomes. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100812183518AAogDQF It contains a link to the NEA's "Artists in the Workforce" study. You should also read the article, "Dancers Face a Tough Time to Land on Their Feet" http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/01/AR2009050100206.html Essentially, if you're looking to make a lot of money, then dance isn't the field for you. You need to understand that only the top 10% of all highly trained dancers manage to land a performing job. Then out of THOSE, only 25% are full-time, full-year workers, as most dance contracts are short-term. But even a full-time dance job is no guarantee that you can support yourself from performing, alone. So, really, only 10% of professional dancers can earn a living with their dancing. Now, OF THOSE dancers who are earning a living (if you're keeping up, 10% of 10% is 1% of all HIGHLY TRAINED dancers), only a tiny fraction can be said to be "quite well paid." Those jobs would be in film, television, major for-profit productions (such as Cirque du Soleil or Jubilee), and principal dancers in major non-profit dance companies. It's hard to even count the choreographers of those top-paid dancers, as those aren't jobs you "get"; they are jobs you create for yourself. It would be like saying you want Angelina Jolie's job when you grow up. To be successful at that level in dance happens to only a handful of people. And, unlike actors, it takes far more talent and far more money to make it to that level.

The more commericial you go the more money you'll make. Audition for music videos, movies, and tv shows or commericials. Those are the biggest paying jobs. Otherwise you have the low paying company life, musical theatre dance if you like being in shows like that, choreography, teaching, and cruise ship entertainment.

Well, if you don't mind not actually dancing, but rather supporting dance, becoming a dance costume designer or lighting technician in dance is probably the most steady, profitable gig that I know of. If you can get into an industry position, like on a cruise ship, at least that will be a steady job. Not many dance jobs pay a lot, and most gigs are short-term freelance positions.
