I'm not sure what to do. i'm not getting to dance enough- & i won't ever progress if i dance under 20 hours?

per week. as it is now, this past year regular classes were mon- 4:30-7:30 tues 5-8:30 wed 5:30-7:00 thurs 6-7:30 fri 4:30-7:30 & sat 10-1:00. that's only 15 & a 1/2 hours a week. i've heard of other schools where the minimum # of hours recquired is 22. i'm about to start high school, and i'm concerned. in previous summers i've gone to well known summer intensives, but winter & spring terms are what make the most difference! we've talked about my going away after 9th grade, but i really don't want to leave home :( . how can i start taking even more classes, and any tips to balance it w/ a new high school hw load? & what is your opinion? can i ever get better dancing the amount i do now? i'm 5'4 & a staggering 109 pounds, embarrassing, but i'm admitting it. also, are there any dieting tips or ways to tighten up? please answer! & thanks :]

Answer:
think quality , not quantity . if you're focusing in class and paying attention to the teacher you should progress . it looks like you would be dancing almost everyday anyway, the best thing you can do is to not focus on how many hours you have, but on how hard you work in class. you dont get better at dancing by taking tons of classe, you get better with passion, hard work, sweat, blood, and tears. you can also work on your own outside of the studio, stretching, practicing and choreographing. okay listen 109 pounds isnt that bad . really . but if you want to get healthier, read seventeen magazine for tips for healthier eating and then work out . a lot . focus on getting stronger rather than losing weight, it will be better for your dancing and your body . best wishes! - christine.

Ok well. I'll tell you the truth. If dancing is your dream and that's what you're going to do when you grow up then just focus on getting the best grades you can so that you have something to back you up later, just in case. Don't take any honors or AP classes because they have a lot of homework that if you continue to dance while taking those classes you will get less and less sleep and won't have the energy to dance. If not and you're going to do something else when you grow up then lower the amount of classes that you're taking. I quit for a while when my studio closed and I found a new one this year and was going to start dancing again when 10th grade started but I was getting more and more homework and I couldn't take the classes. Trust me, I'm just like you. I danced ballet when I was little and 5-6th grade I took unlimited classes and danced Mon-Fri for 18-20 hours. That included an 1 1/2 of pointe and another of advanced ballet. I miss it a lot but I know that my grades are a lot more important. About the weight thing. If you want to dance ballet in a theater company then just make sure you stay under 110 lbs or it might be 100. But really it's a normal thing, and in fact you're perfect if not a little bit underweight for someone who's about to enter high school and is 5'4". Just so you know, since you're a dancer who dances so many hours you gain muscles a lot faster and more then someone who would take maybe only 1 class per day. And muscle weighs a lot more than fat. When I danced like crazy and would even practice at home, I gained like 20-40 lbs but staid the same size, no joke. So don't worry about the weight. Just make sure to eat carbs instead of calories, but only eat the carbs when you need them. Otherwise they'll turn into fat.
