How do I improve my Gymnastics skills?

Skills in gymnastics and dance?

  • im 13 years old (please don't say im too old to start. i already am nervous enough about my age) and LOVE dance and gymnastics.i can never stop thinking about it. unfortunately i can't start until next year. i want to work on some skills. what are some i can work on that i can do alone considering i wont have a spotter? and what can i do to improve flexibility and what can i do to make sure im safe during all this? oh and for gymnastics i have a mat and a beam (b/c my sister is a cheerleader and used to do gymnastics). what can i do on those? thanks! oh and how long would you say i could be able to do a split in b/c i heard it takes months but i heard someone did it in a couple weeks. how long should i stretch normally and how long should i if i want to be able to do a split in a couple weeks? any suggestions on that? videos on all of these skills would be nice (but you don't have to post them if you don't want to) sorry this is a lot but the first good answer gets the best answer!!!! oh and for the dance skills i like lyrical (like on the show dance moms if you watch that) and hip hop (like on the show shake it up) and just regular gymnastics.

Watch videos on youtube, too. I know I already answered your question, but I thought of something else to add haha. They have "how to" videos on youtube that can really help. I have been dancing for years, and I still use them. For gymnastics, things you can work on (that don't require a spotter) are cartwheels, handstands, splits, (flexibility is huge in gymnastics, and dance too) and back bends. Once you get a backbend, maybe try a back walkover, they have videos on youtube for that. Once again, good luck! (:

it should take you 15 min. to stretch properly. you know roll your head to one side then to the other then stretch out your shoulders and wrist. then stand with your feet open wider than your shoulders and make a flat back toward your right leg and that then put your nose to right knee and hold that. then go into lunge with your right knee bent and left leg straight (your right knee should be in line with your toes). then stand up and repeat everything on your left. then stand back up with your feet still wider then your shoulders and make a flat bake towards the middle, hold then go all the way down and hold. then go butterfly. you know sut on your butt and keep your feet together go over and push your knees down. and if the lunges didn't stretch you enough then go into a split except with your front leg bent , it wont work if your doing it wrong! then go back and bend your back leg and keep your front leg straight and lean over (repeat on other side). the do straddle (open your legs with your knees up) and go over to the right hold then go over to the left hold then go over to the middle but keep your knees facing up. then pike (legs together while sitting) point your toes and go over hold then flex and go over hold then you should be ready for the splits. hold each stretch for at least two 8 counts a good partner stretch: put your feet flexed against someone else's (in pike) and grab hands then you both pull. oh and sorry if its not explained well i cant upload a video
