Question About Double Majoring?

A question about Majoring in Dance?

  • I've decided that i want to teach dance. I was originally majoring in the sciences but have looked into my schools dance program and I want opinions on if the program will prepare me properly. Students are required to audition into the dance program, are required to take several semesters/ years of Ballet, Modern and Ballroom. Dance History, 2 semesters of Kinesology, 1 semester of somatics along with the general education courses required by the university and dance education courses and a minor.

  • Answer:

Majoring in dance in a college program that requires an audition for admission should offer excellent preparation for teaching dance. If this is a comprehensive list of requirements for a major in dance, it sounds like a BA program, which is a bit light compared to what you'd get from a BFA program. For example, it's missing music requirements, pedagogy or choreography, and performance. Nevertheless, how much training you get in your technique classes is what's most important for becoming a dance teacher.
