My ballet teacher gave me a kind of feeling that I will be en pointe!!?
-
Nice day, ballerinas... Ok...the story goes like this: My ballet lesson was over and my mom met my ballet teacher, and my mom told my ballet teacher I really want to go en pointe, and my ballet teacher said "Er...If she's not so chubby..." (I am a little chubby!) She said I danced well in class(not showing off), ankles are strong. Then it gave my a kind of feeling my ballet teacher will let me be en pointe if i was more skinny. So...how?? HOW???? Whoa whoa whoa...

The first answer (pheobe love or w/e) is totally wrong. I have been doing ballet for a little less than 2 years. I just started pointe tihs summer and it has been going great. So dont let her comment about not enough experience or age or w/e affecting your chance of going on pointe. In my town there are two studios, one is more relaxed and focuses more on the students acheiving their goals and having fun, while the other aims to make a name for itself and is a bit more professional. I had been at the more professional studio until several girls told me that the teacher had encouraged them to become anorexic or bulemic in order to reach a "healthy weight". If you are a little chubby it really shouldnt affect your chances of going on pointe, so long as you have strong ankles and legs. But if you think it would increase you chances of making it to pointe to lose a little weight go for it! Just try cutting out things with a lot of sugar and pop. Replace them with fruits and veggies and you will start losing weight! Try talking to the teacher and find out how much she thinks you should lose, if she is telling you to lose a lot of weight (more than 15 pounds) go to another studio and ask them to give you a class placement and see what they say about your chances of going on pointe. I know several girls that are...a lot heavier (30 pounds over weight or more) that are dancing on pointe and are great. Dont let your weight hold you back! Good luck!

Okay firstly, sorry to break it down, but I honestly don't think you're going to en pointe yet. I have read your other questions like "when will I go on en pointe"and the best answer was wrong by the way. A lot of dancers go on pointe 13-14 if they started when they were about 3. Now I saw that you only have about 1 or 2 years experience, and I have to be honest to you, you're still a long way from en pointe. And 1 class isn't enough You'll also need like 2 more years until you go on en pointe, because if you go en pointe really early like soon, you're going to seriously injure yourself,so if your teacher is going to let you, she's mad because you're not meant to do that. So just keep up the good work, and you'll have to be patient to go on pointe. You're only like 11?? And you still have a long way to go

When a student goes en pointe is a tricky issue, and some really bad things can happen if you're not fully prepared for the rigorous aspects of dancing en pointe. It's like a baby bird wondering when it's able to fly. In your particular case, I agree that no ballet teacher should comment on a student's weight. Unless it's a direct threat to your personal health, a little extra weight isn't a huge deal when en pointe, and more body mass can be a good thing; many thinner girls, including myself, have trouble building muscle and strength en pointe. In actuality, though fancy ballet companies and modern society may lead you to believe otherwise, ballerinas historically haven't always been stick thin. I have may close friends with a fuller figure who are brilliant pointe dancers. So, unless you are medically overweight and a doctor recommends a diet or exercise plan, I wouldn't worry about it interfering with your dancing. But feel free to incorporate healthy options and exercises into your lifestyle, after all, it can't hurt. But back to the point(e.) Keep performing well in class, and fight to stay steady on your balances, turns, and all of your skills, and I'm sure you'll find yourself en pointe in due time. Remember, every minute you spend preparing for pointe makes it that much easier and more fun when it comes. Best of luck! And sorry about that pun, I really couldn't resist =P

hi:) I have been doing ballet since i was 4, i am now 14. At my dance studio you have to be a certian age to do the test to see if you are ready(stand on your toes for two minutes without moving). There are a few overweight girls at my studio who do just as well as the thinner girls, so even though it's better to be thinn in ballet, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to even try. I'd suggest talking to your teacher and telling her/showing her you can do it. It sounds like your ready, and your teacher knows that, but dancing more, going for runs etc. will help you get more in shape and be ready! hope i helped!

Hm... a ballet teacher should never remark on a student's weight. But she was probably trying to help because it's not very good if a ballerina is slightly overweight/chubby. She only wants you to reach your full potential after all. You could try going on a teeny diet. Lots of fruit, vegetables, water and healthy stuff and tons of exercise like jogging and running. However, sometimes it is actually pretty good if you are chubby because you have better leg muscles and stuff. My legs are quite skinny and it took me a while to develop the appropriate muscles for pointe work. Talk to your ballet teacher rather than guessing what she's thinking. Ask for some pointers in how you could achieve getting your pointe shoes. Good luck! :) EDIT: Having read other answers and looked at your profile, I have seen that you have very little dancing experience. I have been dancing since I was 3 years old and I am now 13 and I have just got my pointes. That's 10 years experience of dancing. Sorry, but there's no way you're going to get pointes yet unless you're some kind of mini Darcy Bussel or ballerine genius.
Okay, well personally, my weight has never been an issue. If you think you're a bit overweight, try doing some core workouts. They'll strengthen that area and help you with turns. If she sees you working hard, doing crunches in the first few minutes before class starts, she might have a better feeling!

I think your ballet teacher is trying to avoid the issue cos you are definitely no where near ready for point so she uses the overweight excuse to get out of a tricky situation. I don't blame her though. You should not be demanding on your teacher as she will know best. I think you need at least 10 years of practices strengthening of muscles and teachnique. Ballet is not an activity where one can get there without a huge ammount of work and yes you need to be reasonably weight balanced, not necessarily skinny, but you must be healthy in mind, body and spirit.

You should have at least about 3 years of training before going en pointe. I don't mean going to dance every day, but more than one class every week will help your ankles and muscles get stronger. I guess you could go on a diet, but don't skip meals, it could make you skip your period. Your activity level should about equal your food in-take. If it doesn't equal it won't be a healthy way of living/ diet.
