How long does it take to learn a back handspring?

How long will it take me to learn how to do a GOOD back handspring?

  • Okay so I just started taking a tumbling class last week. We only have one class per week but after its done with (in march), I'll be taking a different tumbling class twice a week. I want to try out for my school's varsity cheerleading team in November 2012. Right now in the tumbling class, we're working on limbers and back walkovers and I think I'll be able to do a limber and back walkover after the ten class sessions are over in march. I don't have that much upper body strength (I can only do like 7 push ups), can't do a split, but I do have lower body strength. So do you think I will have a good enough back handspring by November? ( which is in about 9 months.)

  • Answer:

Yes! If you work really hard and you're extremely dedicated you will be able to get a good back handspring. But the key is, hard work. I began cheerleading in April of 8th grade, and try outs with in August, I went to my local cheer gym about once a week starting in June, and I was able to get a perfect back handspring by the second week of August, so you should be in good shape! Good luck! You will get it for sure! Just work hard and dedicate yourself 100% percent! :) I hope I helped!

You're gonna need that upper-body strength in order to handle the tension when you land on your hands, plus flexibility is key! If you're really dedicated, condition your body to resistance, drink lots of fluids and understand the mechanics, then you'd learn quickly.
