Does playing an instrument (mainly percussion) make someone a better dancer?
-
I play percussion (drums) in my band and I was wondering if this skill can help me become a better dancer.

Answer:
Yes. You must have an increased awareness of rhythm which can only be good. With some dance forms, playing some percussion is almost compulsory, belly dance (drums and zils), castanets, spoons etc. Which is very unfortunate for me as I happen to be a bellydancer who loathes the sound of zils, can't play them, and has no wish to.

probably not the drumming itself, but it might help you to connect your dancing to music better. you will be more familiar with the counting in music, which will help your dancing be more fluid. this will not be a huge change however, so don't think you will go into class suddenly be 10x better than you were, this takes practice and hard work. good luck!

For sure it does!! With playing an instrument you are learning how to count rhythms in your head and present them. It's the same with dancing!! Being in band will help you learn more rhythms and confidence. With dancing, you have to think about the beats in your head as well as in playing any instrument. And especially percussion!! Will playing the drums, you are IN CHARGE of holding the beat so all the practicing you do there will carry over to your dancing.

It will definitely help you with the rhythm, but that's about it. Rhythm might not sound like much to you, but it is. If you're interested in hip hop dance or subgenres of hip hop dance (such as breakdance, popping, locking, jerking, krumping, etc.) then rhythm will be EXTREMELY helpful to you on the long run. Rhythm is one of the most important and most desirable qualities of a hip hop dancer. Because of the intense beats of hip hop music, hip hop dance choreography often involves a lot of rhythm. Therefore, hip hop dancers need to learn how to connect and coordinate their body with the beat. Rhythm would also be very, very helpful in tap dance, if you're interested in that (rhythm is even more important in tap than in hip hop). As for other dance styles, I highly doubt that your good sense of good rhythm will be of much help to you, other than being able to count out the beats.
well depending the type of dance you want to learn or are in. with lyrical and so on not so much it would help more if u were flexible, but for hip hop it would maybe help with counting the beats and staying in tune... but yes it may help over all to play an instrumint to stay with the music and the counts. personnalyy i would stay with music and dance it will help you in the future
