Whats the difference between Theater Jazz Dance, and regular Jazz dance?

• I want to take a new dance class at my performing company, but I dont know which to take. I could take, JAZZ dance class.. or Theater Jazz Dance class... whats the difference? Thanks!

  It would depend on the school when you use a term like "Theater Jazz dance". The true genre name is "Theater Dance" and that is still very similar to Jazz. Recreational schools have a habit of misnaming dance genres as well as inventing new ones that only exist in their studio and no where else. So, I cannot imagine what their "Theater Jazz Class" would look like. "Theatre Dance" would involve things like the works of Bob Fosse and Jack Cole. They are similar to jazz but more stylized for the theater. Also, because theater has changed and includes other genres from shows like "In the Heights" which has a take on street dance in it to Movin' Out which is a contemporary dance work from Twyla Tharp, the definition has broadened somewhat. Theater dance might also include some minimal singing in it as well. i will give you and example of what Theater Dance is and what Jazz dance is and hope it helps, even though it might not pertain to a what a school is teaching, it is the accepted professional explanation of these dance forms.
