Questions about ballet and RAD syllabus and stuff?
-
im 13, (turning 14 next month) and would like to start ballet but i have some questions hopefully someone can help me...! do i have to start as a beginner or can i skip some grades and pick up on the way since i'm a late starter? i do have some dance experience (contemporary&hip hop) and also Rhythmic Gymnastics which is a bit like ballet, so i know some basic ballet stuff already.. i know whats a pirouette, arabesque, chaine turns, chasse steps (if thats ballet?? :P) etc.. im not expecting to become a professional ballerina starting at this age but i just want to become a better dancer and my dream is to dance on pointe!! :) and im kinda confused here, i was looking at some dance studios and they asked if i would like to do the RAD syllabus exam thing..the exams consist of free movement, character etc? i have no idea what it is?? do i have to do the RAD exam to get on pointe? so then what do you do if you're not doing the RAD exam? do u still learn the same stuff that people on the RAD syllabus do? Thankss for reading.. hope anyone can answer my questions!!

Answer:
The first required year of RAD ballet is grade 6 of the children's exams and intermediate in the vocational exams. You, as a late starter will probably go into the children's exams. In the children's exams (which go to grade 8) there is no pointe work. In the RAD pointe work is only involved in the vocational exams (intermediate) which are for the more serious student. If you wish to do pointe your teacher will most likely make you wait till your third year of ballet, then put you into just a basic beginner pointe class that does not work with a syllabus (beware this class will be mainly 11-13 year olds and you will be 17 by then).

So I'll answer your questions in order 1) You don't have to start as a beginner if you already know some dance. Go to the studio you're taking dance at and ask them to evaluate you (it's nothing formal, you just take a practice ballet class and the teacher will tell you if it's too hard for you). When I was 14, I was a 2nd year Ballet 5 (you usually stay in the higher levels for a couple years). If you've done rhythmic gymnastics and know some of the basics, I'm assuming you'll probably go into Ballet 4. 2) Going on pointe depends on your strength level. To be honest, you have to be really REALLY strong to go on pointe. I went on pointe when I was 13, broke all my toes at least once, and dropped out when I turned 16 because I couldn't handle it. It also depends a lot on your body shape. Any bit of fat anywhere is a huge setback. I'm a little tubby around the thighs/backside area so it wasn't really working out. 3) However, you can still do the RAD exams and take the classes even if you don't do pointe. There's two separate classes for pointe and for ballet, so you would just take the ballet class if you don't do pointe. There's no RAD exam to go on pointe either - it all depends on if your teacher thinks you're ready or not. And you don't have to take the RAD exams if you don't want to. You still learn all the same stuff, just don't test it. Good luck! I hope I answered all your questions!
