Where are good dance classes in Kolkata?

I am getting really bored and sick of my dance classes... what to do?

  • I am 16 and I have been taking dance for 13 years... so literally my whole life. I have been at the same studio with the same people. I recently have been getting really bored and tired of my classes... it's just the same thing every single day. Every class is 2 hours. Warm up, across the floor, competitive dance. It's so repetitive. Most nights I do it after a long day at school from 3-9. Honestly I do it for fun and my teacher makes it hell. She's really intense and doesn't treat us like paying customers. She'll yell at us for not doing things correctly, pick favourites out of the groups and only have them in the front row and doing solos. I really don't think she likes me either. Whenever I do solos she always gives me the worst choreography that doesn't highlight my strengths. Whenever we get our costumes, mine are always a size too big! I literally swim in them. I am a small-medium and she'll usually buy me a large or sometimes an extra large! I swear she thinks I'm fat.. and I'm not. She usually has to tailor them to a small or medium to get them to fit me... like she would save herself time if she just bought me the right size! She will even give the girls bigger than me smalls and they don't fit them! Sorry for that little rant, but bottom line is I am getting sick of all this favouritism at my studio. I love the people there, but the teachers and classes are really starting to annoy me! They're getting so boring and intense! I want dance to be fun again :( Not to mention the fact that we don't get holidays off.. only Christmas. It sucks. I have no time for a social life and homework. I don't really know what to do. I dance because I love performing and for exercise. I am not good at sports and dance is kind of my thing. Don't tell me to switch studios because I have contemplated that many times and it's just not an option; all the other studios in my town are awful. I also really don't want to have to quit. I can't really, either because I'm in the middle of competitive season right now. I wouldn't be able to quit until September if I wanted to, which I don't know if I ever would. It no longer brings me happiness though, which is why I dance. But I really want to keep up with it! I'm really conflicted right now and I don't know what to do. Any advice, especially from dancers would really be appreciated! To anyone that read this rant, I really appreciate it and I'm sorry! xo Thank you in advance xx

I f I were you I would confront my teacher and just tell her the way you are feeling. Sounds to me that she may be a little stressed and is also making you stress. She needs to know how you are feeling but talk to her in a kind way. I also grew up taking dance and I danced for 13 years my dance teachers were like my family I was at dance school more than at home. Like with any family you will have problems and disagreements but if you do not talk about it you will keep feeling bad. In the meantime try to pay more attention to yourself and doing what you love and try not to focus to much on everyone else. good luck and keep dancing!

biggest peice of advice: talk to your teacher. don't make any accusations or bring your parents into it, she will only feel threatened. when you confront her, dont cry because that will make her feel more powerful. treat her respectfully and she might let down her guard. try to approach her after class one night (not before or you'll have to dance through an entire class after the convo) when there aren't a lot of people left in the studio. try approaching her like, "i've wanted to talk to you for a while, but its taken me some time to figure out how to say it. I jst have a few questions." then start asking like "why is it that whenever we get costumes, my costume is usually too big and it has to be tailored? do you want me to redo my measurements to help with that?" "what can i do to improve so that maybe i can move up from the back row in dances?" "i have a few ideas for classes, like instead of doing the regualr routine, we can add in an extra class once a week? like cardio or zumba or tumbling? someting that will work our stamina and strengthen or bodies to help with other things? or maybe once week we could work on choreography? break into groups and make up dances together to build teamwork and creativity? or even have like a monthly project where everone is assigned a style and has to create a 1-2 min solo for fun and show/critique eachother? you could even have it so that we have to incorporate all of our weaknesses so we can improve them. or include our strengths so that you know what we are really good at."

this is my advice to you: accept the things you cannot change and change the things you can.

I have the same problem!! I would try and tough it out, dance harder than you ever have to impress your teacher. My teach puts me in all the dances with the less experienced dancers or just plain bad dancers. She even called the group I'm in the "bigger dancers" she said the costumes for the ballet dance were for petite people only, I'm 4'11 and 80 lbs is that big? No. She put people way bigger than me in that dance also. The latest thing she did was make us all learn this really fun dance that were in STRAIGHT JACKETS for, but oh no I'm not in it. ANd we have 2 dance teams, I made the 10 person one, but not the 15? The one I'm on performs ONCE. Sorry about that rant, but I sooo understand where you're coming from ( I can't switch either, I need to though to get into high schoolol dance )
