How to get into show business? Please read?

  • I am 20 years old college student study and live in New York City. I have done some acting in high school. I can sing and dance, both which I am still learning. I love to listen to Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Dean Martin. I also love Broadway and MGM musicals. My style of singing is jazz, rock & roll, and crooning. My major in college is business administration (particularly in the concentration of international trade, marketing, and finance). I can sing and I can sing good, but I don't have any background in music, whether playing music or reading notes. Now I want to start off as a singer/dancer or actor on Broadway, then may be later on to the movie industry. What college courses should I study? Where should I start, would you say Broadway or some small theater? Who should I contact or look for to have myself and my talent to be discover? How should I market myself?

for film you need to SAG for video you need to be AFTRA first do not pay anyone to be your agent upfront. If they get you a interview and you land the gig you pay them 10% of you fee. Study acting, dance, movement, scene study. Its the toughest game in the world.

To dance on Broadway you must be formally trained (usually for atleast 10 yrs) in dance & vocals & be excellent in both. You then have to audition for casting calls that you find in entertainment ads/newspapers or on the internet. What they look for at auditions are technical knowledge & execution of dance steps/ excellent follow in choreography, and an excellent singing voice w/ your ability to read music & sing it correctly as well as your ability to memorize script. Best of luck-

well, not Business Administration ! first, you have to develope your craft, yourself...your art... do what you love & share it...with ppl who encourage you... But ask yourself "What do I really want to do, enjoy doing; you'll be good at that. You already know what it is, now find places & ways to do it. When someone appreciates your gifts, enjoy the appreciation and keep going. Do it every day. But, be aware that some people will try to take advantage, lie to you; ask yourself "was that for real?" then trust the real answer that comes to you. You don't need everyone's approval; just the approval of those who really enjoy your success.

I think if you want to act you need to maybe try soap operas first since you are already In New York.....and then go from there..and take a class in Drama ..I hear The University of Texas has a great drama department and Austin , Texas has alot of opportunities to get into short clips and movies. My Little sister wants to do what you do ..but wants to go to medical school first because she wants to study to be a cardiologist..she always thinks of going to New york and going to Juliard school of Arts..but we tell her U T is just as good...but to promote try this... http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:G5LvCKpJuDIJ:www.ropeofsilicon.com/director.php%3Fid%3D250+Robert+Rodriguez+talks+in+San+Antonio+Texas&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=5 hope I helped...

If you switch your major to theater arts, it will prepare you for a career in theater. Since you are in New York City, find a good acting teacher (ask your actor friends). You will need a strong background in dance and singing if you want to do Broadway. Start now auditioning for showcases. When you are in a play, mail your "photo-post cards" to all agents and casting directors listed in The Ross Reports, and invite them to your show. Purchase Backstage newspaper every Thursday and audition for everything that is "right" for your type. Backstage is available at most newstands. When you change your major to theater you will have an idea of which courses to take, also, talk with your acting teacher about suggestions on what to take. The college will probably have a plan outlined for your theater major, take what they recommend.
