Should I take Ballet or Jazz? Advanced dancers help!?
-
I've taken Bollywood dancing all my life, and now ive decided to branch out and learn different styles. Pirouettes, A la seconde turns, and all of the different leaps look so cool to me! I'll watch someone perform it and ill say "man, i really want to do that!!!" So i found a studio an everything, but i dont know if i should take ballet class or jazz class. I know the difference, but where would i learn the most technique? does jazz have a lot of jazz hands?? or is that broadway dancing? i wouldnt mind learning jazz because it isnt all about pointing and turnout, but im worried that itll be too relaxed on the technique. and ballet im thinking okay maybe theyll focus on technique, but i personally dont want to focuz on turnout. so im asking dancers who have experience in both styles, and help me choose which one to do...!!!! oh! also, in a Technique class, what do they focus on?if you can answer my questions i'd really appreciate it!

Answer:
Jazz really does require pointed toes and turn out (though not as much turnout as ballet). Jazz isn't all jazz hands, that's Broadway dance like you said. To be able to do jazz really well, you really need the technique of ballet to help you with that. Ballet isn't all turnout, it's required, but I mean, the whole class isn't devoted to turn out. Just friendly reminders from the teacher to keep turned out if someone isn't, because not turning out in some things can cause injury. If you could take both, that would be great, but if you can only take one, I would take a year of ballet and then you can pretty much take anything because most dance styles rely on the technique of ballet, and having the ballet training will get you far. A technique class is strictly the technique of things (pointing properly, turning out, and improving individual skills like turns and everything). Typically, technique classes are for more advanced dancers who have been taking jazz, ballet, lyrical and things like that for a long time. I wouldn't recommend a technique class at this point, especially if you don't want a class devoted to turn out and things like that. Also, keep in mind that a la seconde turns are an advanced turn, and you're not going to walk into a class and do them within the first year. You have to learn the basics first, because the basics are what's going to make you accel at the difficult turns and leaps. Good luck :)

You should do both! if you can only do one, it must be ballet. You cannot perform jazz correctly without ballet technique. Jazz is like fast, funky ballet with a twist. You absolutely need ballet technique before anything.

Ok, personally, I believe that from all of your training, it would be easier to take ballet, however, even if you have all of this training you have to understand that there is no 'easier'. Both are hard to do, and to do a pirouette and turns in seconde take a lot of training. Take it from the girl who has done it for 13 years. You may think, hey that does look cool, but like all types f dance, there is a lot of thought behind each movement, making each look as graceful, but for ballet (not too sore about bollywood), you have to complete the movements, think about what you're doing, where your gong, how it's goingto end ans start and on top of that you have to perform, and think light and graceful.

okk im 13 and i've been dancing since i was 2 years old nd i like ballet and jazz.. uhm in my opinion i think for right now you should take ballet and i say this because you said that you don't want to focus on turnouts but if you do ballet you'll be good in turnouts by the time you enter jazz.....Plus in ballet you get more technique which will help you in any style of dancing (belive it or not but including hip-hop..).ballet is the best class to take before your branch off to other classes.... Jazz is not to relaxed on tech. but like you need tech. to do some of the moves which brings us back to ballet lol you'll understand moves more with ballet xperiencence and jazz is not all about jazz hands...go to youtube.com and type in ballet dance and look at classes and recitals and look att their tech. (posture...turns....pointing ect.) then go to youtube.com and type in jazz dance and watch classes and recitals as well and look their(posture.. turns..pointing ect) andd justt think ballet helped themm...lol uhm in tech. class they will give you some moves and whatever they see you having trouble on they will help you goo over it so that you can excel in it and do better in all your dances....

I think you should do both because you'll be improving technique in each dance style. But if you can only take one,I suggest a ballet class. In jazz, you'll be doing lots of jetes pirouettes and everything ranging from what is basic technique in ballet. In ballet, if you don't want to take it seriously, you don't need to go on pointe(Special ballet painful shoes),but it'll help a lot for jazz. Jazz is a more type of dance where it's more funky and very energetic but you do a lot of ballet turns and jetes whatever etc. In a technique class,I'm not too sure about what you're talking about, but in ballet you have to do a lot of plies and tendus and everything like arabesque, jetes, A LOT of turns;single/multiple pirouettes, fouettes etc. So I suggest taking ballet then jazz otherwise;do both! good luck

do ballet i have taken it for months and it is awsome!!!
Brelyn :) :)
Most technique you'd learn in ballet. Start with ballet. One of my biggest regrets is not starting with ballet. Jazz doesn't really use jazz hands unless it's theater jazz or broadway style. They're more often used in tap actually. For you, they have classes that are like ballet/jazz technique. Deffinetely take that. You won't learn any combinations, but you'll do ballet bar, stretch, leaps, pirouttes, fouettes, etc.
