How to break dance?

My life has little direction. How to break into the dance industry?

  • I've always loved dance and art, and I have qualifications in both, only I don't know where to go with these qualifications, the idea of university has never really appealed to me apart from this combined dance and art course I heard about but where could that take me? I wouldn't want to be a dance or art teacher. I'd love to be in a company doing performance work but I'm not good enough and it's just a competitive industry, how could I go about breaking in? Also what other carriers are they available in the dance field apart from teaching? Thank you X

  • Answer:

Well if you're planning on breaking into the dance industry there's one thing that you'll need.... Experience. Performing experience is helpful, certainly, but it doesn't have to be on the fully professional level. You can get some pretty great experience in amateur performing - performing in your neighborhood - at fairs, in senior centers, for schools of all types. The basic experience is the same - the preparation and the result is the same. Other dance related careers can be as a teacher, choreographer, coach, writer (critique/history/feature, etc.), physical therapist, kenisiology, music for dance, dance historian, benesh or other notation professional, artist, set designer, costume designer, costume maker, cosmetologist, makeup artist, wardrobe mistress, rehearsal specialist or assistant, dance masseur, dance-music historian, librettist, dance librarian...and many more I am sure. I'm not looking for a career in dance, but I do know A LOT of dance instructors and every time we have a conversation on this topic, experience comes up. Good luck in whatever you choose to pursue.

Consider the field of arts administration where you work for a dance company as a staff member doing any number of duties that help to promote the company and it's day-to-day activities. Your qualifications in art would be an asset in this field. You could also become a dance photographer or videographer. You're right that breaking into dance as a performer is highly competitive and it's not for those who lack direction. It's only for those who can't see themselves doing anything else.

Hi =] Join a dance club, you could do modern dancing, street, classical, anything. I think most dancers make their way up from there, as they get to take part in competitions and get recognized, and eventually work will come their way. Are you wanting to dance on stage?

You could be a choreographer, a dance physiotherapist, or a benesh notator; all good careers in dance. Here's some info that may be of help: http://www.he.courses-careers.com/dance.htm Good luck.

I 'm not sure, but you sound like an enthusiastic person so I'm sure you will find a way to make your talent available.
