How do you dance hip hop correctly?

How hard is it to switch from one dance style to another? (contemporary to street/hip-hop)?

  • I'm 16 years old and I've studied and danced contemporary for 2 years. I'm going to college soon and I don't want to do contemporary this time round. I want to do hip-hop/street dancing. But, the thing is.. because I used to do contemporary dancing, it looks a bit weird when I do some of the movements from street/hip-hop dancing. The first thing someone usually says is that I look so 'pretty', delicate or girly doing the movements. I have no trouble picking up the dance routines and I've got confidence, it's just the way that I look while dancing. So, will that change with time and practice? or can I do anything to change it? my posture? the way I carry myself? anything? I know that every dancer has their own look and individual way of moving, but they're still able to pull off the style of the dance. I don't want to take my individualism away, I just wanna bring out my 'swag' shall we say. I love the way these dancers dance, especially the girls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r-9lN4G3%E2%80%A6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w-BKILgu%E2%80%A6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc0EzA2zW%E2%80%A6 detailed answers are appreciated. Thank you!

  • Answer:

I think that any willing to learn dancer can switch at any given time... the transition may seem weird at first, but there are many techniques that are the same in contemporary and hip hop style dancing... best of luck!
