Answer:
It's not painful; just awkward. Imagine a 2x4 laying flat between your legs and that's essentially the experience you'll have on Vortex and every other stand-up coaster out there. Actually, that's probably part of the reason why we haven't seen any new stand-up coasters opening up for the past ten years or so (the last significant one to open was the Georgia Scorcher at Six Flags Over Georgia and that was back in May 1999).

It is a standup roller coaster, yes. Don't let that frighten you, though. I've never been on Vortex, but I have been on four others with the same kind of "seat": Iron Wolf, Mantis, Chang, and Riddler's Revenge. It is not painful at all (at least not down there). The front is going to be the smoothest place on the ride. I'm sure you won't hurt yourself again though, unless you continue to have back problems, in which case you should not ride anything period.

Personally I think stand ups are painful on the knees. If they loop anyway, but that could just be me. So you don't want to ride a coaster that has been operating for years that had an accident a few years ago? Rides are checked daily, weekly, monthly and rebuilt yearly. If there was an accident on a ride, it is shut down, the state and ride manufactor get involved, determine the cause, fit the issue and reopen after many insecptions.... You'll be fine

The seat is actually comfortable. Be careful of your head because it will throw your head around especially in the harness but it's ok. I actually don't like riding the Demon because its painful throughout and there's no thrill for me. Top Gun is still the best coaster there.
