Aren't Roller coasters just over-rated rides?
-
I just got back from Orlando, the reason why Disney and Universal are such good places for theme parks is because all the rides are so different. Disney was AMAZING!! and so was Universal, however, Busch gardens, which is only roller coasters and animals sucks!! I have a dislike of roller coasters, not because I'm scared, because to me they are boring, and before you think it, yes I have been on loads, and loads of good ones too, but the thing with roller coasters is this, how do you improve them? You can't! Its like this, Boring Thrill seeker: "Oh man, come look at this brand new roller coaster that's just come out, its amazing!" Barry White: "why? What's so good about it?" Boring Thill seeker: "Oh nothing, just that it has more loop to loops than any other in the world and the drops faster and higher than the previous one!!!! WOWZERS!!!" That's roller coasters in a nut shell. All it seems now with roller coasters is well lets make it faster or taller, and then one day an idiot said "OMG I got it! We'll make the seats look down and make the legs dangle!!!" Thats not an improvement in my eyes, thats clearly showing to me that they are struggling to make new ideas for them. However Rock 'n roller coaster and Hulk get my kudos, as they actually are different, again my point to Disney/Universal shown. Now look at the other rides. Star tours, E.T, Terminater 2 3D, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean... I could go on, now these are interesting rides and are different and unique in the fact that you'll only find them at Disney/Universal. If I was that much into roller coasters, I could just stay at home in England save £5000 and go to Blackpool or Alton Towers. It pains me to see so many people that are so thrilled off them, if everyone just didn't bother, the money would go towards much better rides. Anyway, its not that much of an important subject lol! But I do really love Disney, and I'm scared that one day it'll just be ruined as it trys to constantly compete with roller coasters, which in my eyes is the wrong direction altogether, as like I said, ANY theme park can build a roller coaster. So what do you think? Do you like coasters but agree with me? Do you totally disagree? Do you agree whole wholeheartedly? Thanks in advance for your reply :-)

Answer:
"how do you improve them [rollercoasters]?" Obviously you know nothing about rollercoaster history and the amount of engineering that went into improving what used to be semi-low-tech bumpy rides with rough transitions to the high-tech smooth coasters that are coming out today (just the seat restraints alone have improved immensely, adding to comfort, capacity, and safety). Honestly I'm not even going to go into how coasters had improved over the years...anyone with knowledge of the history of coasters (or any amusement/theme park ride for that matter) could write a novel on how these structures improved and how each coaster manufacturer is different. If you don't like coasters, that's great (because that means shorter lines for me to wait on!). I understand some people don't "get it"...it's like saying "oh look...a new suspension bridge...who cares, how is that better then the bridge it replaced??..."..why waste their money on a new bridge when it can go into something like a new building or highway?" So what...some people don't care and that's their opinion, but to say that these structures do not improve is ignorance. I'm not sure why the theme park industry must cater to one person's needs/opinions. If there's a demand for coasters, parks will build them for increased revenue. Either way, Disney is not going toward the "coaster direction"...I don't know where you are getting that. Most of their new rides are not coaster-related. I think you are lacking the knowledge for your argument - but either way, it's your opinion, which is fine. If you don't like coasters then don't worry about them or go on them, just enjoy the other rides. If you argued that coasters are lacking in theming, I would agree with you there, but as someone who is knowledgeable in this subject I can say that it's ignorant to make any claims that coasters are useless (or do not improve) yet other rides aren't.

Coaster are an amazing engineering accomplishment. You have no idea just how long it takes from a coaster to be a idea/drawing on a piece of paper to the real thing. There is a ton of work that goes into them for them to be able to run. Floorless? Do you know how long that had to be in the works before someone actually put people on it? For a new ride it takes 2-3 YEARS from engineering to the real thing being built. They can't just say, "hey lets remove the floor and change the seats" the entire thing has to be re-engineered, can't have people getting hurt.

One thing to say " If you don`t like rollercoasters, don`t ride them." Some people like rollercoasters some people don`t (like you)

roller coasters are good for one main reason. THEY'RE ARE FUN! I mean, come on. what other reason would people love them so much? to look at them? I dont think so.
How can you improve? Do you have any idea of the history of roller coasters? You think someone just randomly created a steel coaster with a perfect support structure on the very first try? NO! They started out with small, wooden coasters back in the 1800's. 10 foot tall coasters were a thrill back then. They progressed until the 1960's, which is when the first steel coaster was made. It was Matterhorn in Disneyland. Then, Revolution was opened as the first coaster with a loop. There are just way too many advancements that were made and are yet to be made. I don't believe you have ever ridden a roller coaster. Saying they're boring is like saying sitting on your couch staring at the wall is exciting. EVERY SINGLE RIDE IS DIFFERENT! Every ride has a different layout, different elements, and different forces. Also, you say inverted coasters are pointless. They are not. THEY ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN NORMAL COASTERS! You would KNOW that if you ever rode a roller coaster. There is still more than enough ways to improve roller coasters. What about a vertical wooden coaster? What about a coaster off a skyscraper? What about smoother? Faster? Taller? More intense? Countless new elements and an infinity amount of layouts to create? Your entire argument is completely invalid. You would know this if you ever rode a coaster over 20 feet tall. EDIT: Also, inverted coasters are completely different than sitting coasters in every way. The heartline is COMPLETELY changed, so the elements have to be shaped VERY differently. Also, the support structure has to be dramatically altered.

Roller coasters are horrible, I went on one and it was my very first one. After it ended, I staggered off the rollercoaster and threw up in the toilets and the rollercoaster was the very first ride I went to so therefore it was the start of my day and I was sick and dizzy and tired all day :/

I do agree with you, it's completely weird why everyone like roller-coasters, I love them too, but I really don't know why!! Lol, they just, erghhhhh hard to explain! I get what you're trying to say, and to all the people saying it's a unique and brilliant piece of engineering, really? Come on, you wouldn't spend £££ to go to a park and look at a ride and say, "YAY, ELECTRIC AND METAL" Lol. But you are right and to the asker, you really are explaining roller-coaster sorta badly. I mean, it's not just putting people upside down, it's getting a new model, planning space, getting loads of £££dosh£££ :D and all inbetween. It's like saying Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer only learnt how to say the word 'tennis' and 'racquet' and knew how to hit a ball over a net around two thirds the size of them. I agree with you, yeah but you can't stop my love of the coasters :)
