Can we break the Shannon capacity?

When do avoid spring break crowds at Disneyland?

  • My husband and I had our honeymoon at WDW this last April. We didn't check the spring break schedules and it was so busy they were maxing out capacity at several of the parks. We were given 2-day passes to Disneyland as a gift and want to use them to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. Our anniversary is 4/4 which is Easter and obviously not a good time to go. The tickets must be used by 4/12 so we are trying to find the best date. Its fairly easy to find college spring break schedules and 3/8-3/12 will have 1.2 million college kids on break, but will college kids be flooding Disneyland? Between Disneyworld, Florida and Cancun etc, I'm not sure they will be the ones crowding the park. The only real data on elementary schools is that 'conventionally' their breaks are the week before or after Easter. But apparently thats not always the case these days? I'm more worried about elementary schools. Any suggestions for avoiding the crowds in March? If we went 3/5 and 3/6 (Friday and Saturday) would that be best? Or would all those kids who are off on Monday the 8th already be at the park? Going too far off season, like in February means more of a chance for rain and shorter park hours. A crowd isn't a bad thing, but we don't want trouble finding a bench to sit on and want to avoid not being able to go on many rides because every line is too long and fast passes are running out too fast.

  • Answer:

Call the park and ask for prospective park population during the timeframe you're looking to go. The problem with Spring Breaks is that school districts schedule them at different times... We are also planning on attending Disneyland during our kids' Spring Break, which is March 15-19 here. Orange County Public School Spring Break is March 29-April 9...so this will probably be the busiest time "Spring Break-wise". Good luck...hope you and your husband have an awesome 1st Anniversary!!!

Early March is better. Your suggestion of 3/5 & 3/6 is probably pretty good. Most spring breaks will fall between mid-March to mid-April. That is a little early for most school systems to be out, so you will probably be good. If there is any chance that you could go the week before, that will help.

Disneyland is really busy most of the time. But if you go on days like Monday or Tuesday (that is if you are able to schedule it) that would be best. But if you must go on the weekend, you will not be able to avoid the crowds.

Well your problem is going to be complicated by a lot more than Spring Break. Yes, you're correct that various districts plan their Spring Break differently making March problematic from a crowd perspective. But also in late March the HUGE World of Color nighttime spectacular is set to debut at California Adventure, making that park extremely crowded with all the Annual Passholders trying to get in to see it. I'd recommend early March or pushing up to February if you're trying to avoid crowds.

Spring Break is really not the best time to go because that's when all the locals go. I went once during Spring Break when it wasn't crowded but that was because there was a light drissel. I was just there this last Friday and Saturday, and Saturday was not crowded at all, the longest line was 30 minutes. I would check out when the Anaheim Schools go on break and go the week they are still in school.

The average precipitation is actually lower in February than it is in March. http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/vacationplanner/wxclimatology/monthly/graph/USFL0615 If you are still worried about rain, you can bring light rain gear with you and look for cover if the rain gets too heavy at times. We've been to a lot of parks in the rain, and it was seldom a problem. The lines were shorter when it was raining, too. We don't like crowded parks, so January and February would be my months of choice. Keep in mind that weekends and holidays will be busier than non-holiday weekdays. Tuesdays through Thursdays should be your best bet.
