Afraid of roller coasters. Upcoming field trip to Hershey Park?!?
-
I'm not afraid to admit that I'm terrified of roller coasters. Not the speed, but the drops! Next year in June, right before school is over, we're going to Hershey Park for a field trip! Our school is roller coaster crazy and they're going to beg me to go on the "Fahrenheit", a new roller coaster that's gonna be built there! They say it will have six inversions! How do I overcome this fear? I can't go to theme parks every month to try out roller coasters. I want to have fun and they DO look like fun. Help? Thanks. :-)

Answer:
I understand your fear. I used to be scared to death to go on one, because of the flips and the heights. But finally I went on a real one for the first time in Six Flags with my two sisters, and I LOVED it. Just be sure to go with someone you trust (like a friend) and don't think to much about it. Just force yourself to go, and sure you'll be freaking out, especially when it climbs the steep hills (that is the scariest part actually) and close your eyes through the flips and drops (and of course hold on tight for comfort) and it goes so quickly and by the time it's over, you'll be thrilled that you went on it and you'll want to go again. I know I did! Part of the excitement is getting scared and going up and down those hills. You'll regret it if you chicken out, and feel good that you at least went on one, if you decide that you don't like it, so you can say for sure that you don't like them because of experience. But I'm sure that won't be a problem. Good luck and have fun!

The reason many people are afraid of roller coasters is the view they experience as it progresses through the ride. Close your eyes as you go through the hard parts, and it should go through smoothly.

I was afraid too when I was younger. You have to remember to breathe, so screaming helps. You'll likely be shaky and nervous in the line, but after you've been on it, you'll want to go again! Adrenaline is making you nervous before, and making you want more afterward! Really, roller coasters are a lot of fun. And just think: if you don't like it, the ride only lasts about 1 minute on average, so you'll be fine. These things are tested every morning and the newer steel rollercoasters are designed to be safer than ever. Just sit down, keep your eyes open, scream a lot, and hold on. You'll be fine. Just relax and enjoy. If you can wind up swinging it, see if you can go to a theme park or an indoor family fun center and ride a gentle rollercoaster. Or, you can try closing your eyes, sitting up, and picture riding the coaster. Really, it's a lot of fun.

listen. most people say they a scared of roller coasters, but have never been on one. the drops are over in 2 seconds. Ive been to Hershey park. you will love them, you just have to get yourself on. trust me. i was in a group of ten people who hated roller coasters. we all went on storm runner(which was the biggest one until this new one) and they all wanted to go on again. you are gonna regret not going on if you don't. and i think that wooden coaster (wildcat, comet) are much scarier, but still fun. steel coasters the ride is smooth. wooden is bumpy with harsh turns. ***TRUST ME*** at least try smaller one first, like super dooper looper(one loop, it was call that because it was one of the first to have loops) and work your way up.

Wihle you are there, go on some of the milder roller coasters first. Start with comet, a simple but great one made of wood with no loops. Then go on sooperdooperlooper, a slower one with 1 loop. After that, go on great bear, faster then comet iwth a few more loops. By then, you should be ready to go on Fahrenheit, but go on StormRunner also if you like them. Hope you have fun! p.s. I used a similar technique at Busch Gardens to go on Griffon. Now coasters are all I talk about! :)
