How to go grocery shopping? 17 y/o need advice?
-
This may sound like a very ignorant question, due to how you just pick what you want to buy and then pay for it, but as a teenager who recently got thier license , I haven't been to a supermarket in years because I normally don't go with my parents when they go shopping. Now my mom is vouching for me to go grocery shopping for her and I feel a bit intimidated by the process because I haven't been through it in years. If anyone who got this far into the question please just give me some tips the specifics of grocery shopping and payment methods and the very specifics of the checkout process. (For example, payment with cash vs check vs credit card, and what i have to sign and what the proper processes are for each one) Also if someone could please explain to me the self checkout areas and how exactly they work.(specific info please ) So , yeah if you can give all the advice that you can about the things I mentioned above I would really appreciate it and also if you have extra info i'd like to know about that as well.

Have your Mum take you during mid-week when it wouldn't be so busy. Pretend though you are by yourself, and have her coach you on what to buy, brands to look out for (and avoid), how to read the adverts, etc), sales, blah blah. Have your Mum show you what to do at the checkout regarding payment form and packaging your groceries. I don't use self checkout areas, so I can't help you there, but good luck, and don't sweat it!

Alright, here goes. Depends on where you go and how much things you're buying, you may want to use shopping cart. ***Using shopping cart. They often ask you for a quarter or a loonie(if you live in Canada) in order for you to use them. Don't worry, you get that back when you return the cart 1) Don't forget the grocery list 2) Double check the list and the product you're buying 3) Make sure if your mother has points or membership card(s) for where you're going to be shopping 4) You may want to bring some plastic bags or eco friendly reusable bags. Some stores gives you 2 cents or 5 cents off each bag you bring Now to the register. This one is for register with cashier. 1) Put your products on conveyor belt they have or on the counter as well as the bags you brought if you did 2) Leave heavy things in your cart. Cashier will scan it with small scanner device they are equipped at register *** If you don't have cart, you should be able to put everything on counter or conveyor belt 3) Do that "How are you?" "I'm good thanks" process if that happens then present your points or membership card(s) *** If the cashier seems to be busy scanning the products and not noticing your points or membership card(s), leave him/her be. Wait until cashier is done and when he/she asks you for the method of payment, you present them together. 4) Payment. Cashier will ask the method of payment. Debit, credit or cash would be the standard choices. Not that many people actually uses check for that *** If you're doing check, which I've never done, you may want to ask cashier's advice on how to do it *** Using debit(bank card) is easy. Just like any other store you go to. Swipe or insert if you have a card with chip, then choose the method of payment, authorize the payment with secret pin code you made at bank, then it's approved *** Using credit is easy too. Just give it to cashier then he/she will do it for you. Cashier will give you paper or electronic device for you to sign. You sign it and done! *** Cash is easy and I don't think I need to explain that 5) Cashier generally put things you're buying into bags while he/she is scanning items. Sometimes cashier will ask you if you have your own bags, sometimes they forget and start to put them into their plastic bags for you. If you do have your own bags, make sure to tell him/her *** Some store, like Superstore(Canada) won't do that for you. They make you buy plastic bags for 2 or 5 cents and you have to bag them by yourself *** It would be nice if you could say "Thanks" to cashier before you leave 6) You grab the bags, head to your car and drive home! *** If you used shopping cart, make sure to return it to get the money back! Now to the self served. Self serving register could be tricky. I don't recommend to use them unless if you have less than 5 to 15 items. I say that because depends on which store you use, machines are smarter and dumber. *** Usually, there are some store clerks sticking around the machine. They come to you when you need help or when the machine is screwing up 1) Put the products on counter if you'd like, start the scanning by pressing "Start" on screen or button or whichever they have 2) Scan them all and PUT THE ITEMS on where they have their plastic bags. If you don't, the machine will ask you if you don't want to use their bags EVERY TIME you don't put an item on that side OR if you're not fast enough. It's because the plastic bags area is actually a scale and machine wants to check if you have that products or not 3) Most likely, there will be a problem. Generally, it will say "Error. Wait for assistance" and it will summon store clerk there, fix it for you and you go on. 4) Payment. Screen will show up and tell you to choose the method of payment. Debit(bank card) and credit are pretty much the same as what you do at any registers. But cash is different. You have to insert cash into the machine in right way. Some machines are so stupid, it won't accept it. If that happens, get help from store clerk 5) You grab bags, don't forget to get receipt and head to your car

The first thing you should have is a list, a grocery list of items you are being tasked to buy The second thing you need is some form of payment. If there is a check involved, the checking account needs to already be registered with the store; you also need a picture I.D. to write a check. If you use a debit card, you need to know the PIN. If you use a credit card, you simply need to swipe it and then sign the screen on the pin pad with the 'pen' that has been provided When you arrive at the store, make yourself comfortable. Take off your gloves, take off your hat (or lower your hood), unwrap your scarf and unzip your coat Pull a shopping cart out of the corral The first area of the store will likely be floral and bakery. The second aisle is usually loaves of bread and other bread products. The rest of the aisles make up packaged and processed foods and non-food items like cleaning supplies and kitchen items like foil, plastic wrap, wax paper, and reuseable containers. "Like items" will be together like breakfast foods, baking ingredients, International items, etc. The 'healthiest' area to shop in any store is around the perimeter where you will find fresh foods, lean meats and proteins, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Most of your shopping should be around the outside of the aisles; then you can supplement with things on the interior (down the aisles) like whole grain breads and pastas and canned tomatoes When you get to the check out, resist the temptation to buy any of the items displayed there (unless they are on your list). These are impulse items and are designed to tempt you into spending more money than you originally intended when you walked in. Use the divider to separate your order from the person ahead of you when there is enough room on the belt to add some of your items. Remember that patience is a virtue: give the person ahead of you the time they need. At the same time, when it is your turn, check out as quickly, accurately and efficiently as possible to keep the person behind you from waiting. Keep your eye on the display and do your best to ensure you are being charged correctly Be sure to thank the cashier (s/he should thank you too) and clear the cash register area being mindful about others also moving out (or going the wrong way) so you can avoid any accidents In the parking lot, unload your cart and return your cart to the cart corral so that it doesn't get in the way of other cars
