A popular magazine editor named Sarah Josepha Hale read about the 1621 feast and decided to use it as a model for an annual holiday. She published recipes for turkey and stuffing and pumpkin pie and started traditions that had nothing to do with the colonists. That's when Americans starting eating those foods on Thanksgiving! First, for 'My" answer, I can not fit a Bison into the oven and Salmon aren't that easy to catch at least not around where I live! (Ok for the joke answer?) Well on the first Thanksgiving they ate many things besides turkey. One story tells how Queen Elizabeth ate roasted goose during a harvest festival. When the pilgrims arrived in America from England they repalced that with turkey because they were easier to find the geese.

The legend tells us that the people at the first Thanksgiving celebrated by eating wild turkeys, a game bird that was common back east. The eastern seaboard was not the home of the buffaloes, they did not hunt them there. There are probably salmon there, and they may have eaten them too, but this late in the year, the salmon run would have been over. The pilgrims did not bring turkeys from England with them. They learned how to kill and cook them from the local NDN people

Because thanksgiving is supposed to be a big feast. So they naturally selected the largest bird they could find to eat. It has to do with size and what was available.

roast dinners are the way to go. old english roots, they still have to roast on sundays! also, turkey is delicious. i cannot wait for thanksgiving dinner!
