Did you do any college courses about becoming a chef? 6. Have you always liked cooking or was it just an attractive career choice? 7. What are your working hours like?

  • Answer:

    1) Yes 2) On the job training. I got my first chef job after being a line cook for 7 years. However, I did eventually attended culinary school after working in the industry for 20 years! 3) Never was an apprentice. Started out washing dishes and worked my way up to line cook and then chef. 4) I'm currently working part time as a cook and going to school for a business degree, so I don't earn much ($12/hour). The state where I live doesn't pay chefs much. At my last chef's job, I was earning about $24,000/year. The highest paying chef job I've had paid me about $35,000/year. 5) College courses are very important. The more education a chef has, the more $$ they can make. I plan on getting an MBA. This, in addition to my culinary degree, will help me earn top dollar as a chef. 6) I've have always liked cooking. However, I did not choose this career. I just happened to fall into it. 7) Most of the jobs I've had as a chef required that I work 50 - 80 hours per week; and that's mostly nights, weekends and holidays.
