Is polycarbonate flexible?

Is using a polycarbonate bottle safe for brewing kombucha?

  • I know that they say you're supposed to use glass in brewing Kombucha, but recently I purchased a Bluewave 5 gallon wide mouthed polycarbonate jug. Would it be safe for the Kombucha to ferment in the container for 1-2 weeks. I've done some searches online some people say it's safe, and some say to avoid it. Curious as to what you people think? I know about incidents of polycarbonate and BPA. The container: http://www.amazon.com/Bluewave-Gallon-Big-Mouth-Multi-Use-Bottle/dp/B000ZHHEB6/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1293947446&sr=8-8

  • Answer:

I really can't claim to be an expert on this, but my husband used his polycarbonate bottle for the last kombucha he brewed. I didn't notice any problems from it, and the 'bucha was fantastic. So I would put my money on it being safe. :-) Have fun!
