Why do Italians drink so much wine?

Why do you drink wine? What kind of "experience" does it provide you with?

  • For my university branding project, we have to design a new house wine but first we need to research the market and get some consumer insight on wine. So it'd be great if you could tell us: why do you drink wine, instead of other alcoholic beverages such as beer or cocktail? What kind of feeling does wine provide you with? Why do you choose the house wine instead of a brand wine? Thanks!!

  • Answer:

I occasionally drink wine, and if I do, it is never a "house wine". I prefer a couple of different extremely dry Sauvignon Blancs for the taste...or a nice heavy port to go along with a nice cigar after a satisfying meal. My wife, on the other hand, loves wine, especially the house wine from a local Italian restaurant. But there are certain wines she prefers to drink by itself, and others that go with different foods. As far as why people choose a "house wine" over a name brand, it is "normally" due to price (but also because the waiter/waitress/sommelier recommends it) .

I am not a big wine drinker but when I have drank wine before I have noticed it is a very relaxing, smooth drink. Sangria (Spanish wine) is a very tasty beverage as well as red wine. I guess it is all what you prefer, and what kind of social situation you are in. Sometimes a few beers with friends is enjoyable, and sometimes a glass of wine while watching a movie alone or with someone is enjoyable too. If you are at a party chances are you aren't sipping beers with people, chances are you are being crazy and taking shots of something heavy, like I said it all depends on the social situation you are in and what your taste buds prefer.

House wine is usually a little generic, cheaper to buy, and usually a blended wine, which wine snobs often poo-poo. House wine plays second fiddle when the meal is the main event. Wine rarely gives me a buzz because I drink it with meals and not enough to affect me. I drink wine because of the connection with ancient traditions of my western civilization roots (European) and for the health benefits. Red wine is heart-healthy and aids in digestion of fats. It is much healthier than soda or sweet tea.
