How long does it normally take to find a job?

Bartenders, how long did it take you to find your first job and how did you find it?

  • did you have a connection? did you answer an add on CL? Did you just call up all the local bars and talked to the owners? I know new bartenders tend to get the least lucrative shifts..so how did you support yourself while working these shifts? I am currently attending bar tending school. I have learned a lot and (luckily) Once I become certified, I will have a placement counselor to work with. But certification is so tough, Im wondering what are the chances I'll get something without being certified...and what to expect with the first jobs (certified or not).

  • Answer:

If you don't know anyone in the places you want to work, start hanging around there. Get to know the head bartender, manager, anyone that can help you. I am not certified but I walked in after getting to know a few people and went in with confidence. I just asked them to give me a chance on the "money" nights and had to prove myself. I ended up getting promoted to Head Bartender/Assistant Manager in a month. As long as you know what you are doing, have a great personality, and get some great regulars, you will be just fine. The best advice though, since most of your payment is in cash, make sure you don't just blow it. Make sure you have a bank account to deposit your money as quickly as you make it. That way there isn't a temptation to spend it all on your day off. Good luck!! Let us know how it all works out!
