What is the rate of sales tax?

What is the sales tax rate on liquor in Virginia?

  • On the VA ABC store website it says: •Distilled spirits retail prices include 20 percent state tax. •Wine retail prices include 4 percent state tax and $.40 per liter wine tax. •5 percent sales tax will be added to the retail price of wines and distilled spirits at the register. •A 2.5 percent sales tax will be added to the retail price of non-alcohol items at the register. So is the tax rate 25%? or is the 20% already added into the prices on the website? or is it just 5%? Thanks in advance!

  • Answer:

My understanding of it is that most of those taxes are already taken into account. The 5% sales tax is added at the register (VA sales tax is indeed 5%). So when you're at the the ABC store and a bottle is $19.99, all the taxes but the sales tax have been added, so price comes out to $20.99.

You found the site. Send them an email or call. Depending on the state, county, city. It is possible that there may be a specific tax amount. You can ask the straight question to whom you buy the alcohol from. If they don't know the manager should. I don't have their tax tables in front of me and I don't know what city/county you are in. Where I live taxes can come from all three sources.
