How long is Red wine good for after its been opened?

How long will a bottle of opened red wine last?

  • My husband and I opened a bottle of Merlot about a week ago and stuck it in the fridge and forgot about it. Could we drink it tonight? How long does opened wine last?

  • Answer:

A bottle of red wine that has been opened usually only stays good for a max of up to 4 days even in the fridge. Even if it isn't vinegar by now (which is what happens when wine oxidizes or mixes with air) it's flavor may be completely off or it may have bacterial contamination. To see if it's good first check it against the light, if it is cloudy don't drink it. If there is no cloudiness then next you'll want to smell it. If it smells fine and not like vinegar than take a sip. If it tastes okay then drink it. :D

It won't hurt you, but the flavor may not be good anymore. A week is about the top limit to leave a bottle of wine open, unless you have done something to remove the air. If it tastes ok, drink it.

I'd use that one for cooking and open a new one tonight. It won't hurt you but just won't taste as good. There are special ways for resealing a bottle...that pumps in nitrogen or something that is supposed to keep it like new.....but can be expensive. I prefer to open a bottle....drink it all (with the help of my spouse).
